OxyClean
Anyone know if I can get this crap or a housebrand frome superstore or trashytire? Is it a good idea to wear gloves while working around it, and is it safe to clean the rubber parts on the popits on kegs without degrading the rubber??

Re: OxyClean
I have a big tub in the basement. Got it at Costco. SS has it for sure. I don't wear gloves. I have cleaned lots of stuff. Stainless and "rubber" I soak in hot water solution for hours or days. It can precipitate and a tooth brush will be needed.Dirt Chicken wrote:Anyone know if I can get this crap or a housebrand frome superstore or trashytire? Re: OxyClean
Walmart has a scent free Truevalue version. I don't bother wearing gloves when using the stuff, although it's not a bad idea...it's kinda rough on my hands and slippery. I believe the active ingretient Oxyclean is part of whats in PBW...I guess it's safe on rubber, haven't had a problem so far.

I also really like the no-name perfume/dye-free spray bottle stuff from the SS. Very convenient.
I don't shop at Mallwart either.

Re: OxyClean
Hey can I get the bucket of dry oxyclean from ss? Or will they just have some liquid form. Also do you guys dilute it according to the instructions? One time use or what lifespan can I expect from this stuff once mixed in water and in contact with stainless? Also wanted to know if it's safe to clean the popits with this stuff, is it safe on the rubber gaskets??

i bought a tub of dry stuff from wally mart, as it was the only place to get unscented. choose your devil, flowery smelling kegs or buying one item from walmart. i think everyone sells a powdered form.Dirt Chicken wrote:Hey can I get the bucket of dry oxyclean from ss? as for use, it didnt really have any instructions for this type of thing. i usually disassemble a keg, chuck in all the bits and a scoop or two of oxyclean, fill it with hot water and let it soak a while. never had any issues, but i might be concerned if i used the scented stuff.
i always make a fresh batch, i mean for the size of the tub and the cost it just isnt worth it to save it

Re: OxyClean
I use the unscented stuff as well. I typically add one scoop to four litres of hot water. It works very well on stainless steel, rubber, poppits, you name it. I always use new stuff and don't re-use it at all, although I don't see any issues with reusing it if it's not dirty.

Re: OxyClean
I use the scented oxyclean from costco and never had any issues. I use 1 scoop per keg, carboy, or bucket. I toss in everything that needs to be cleaned and leave sitting for 24hrs then rinse well with hot water.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Re: OxyClean
Pretty much the same here (though I haven't opened my new tub of unscented Walmart stuff yet). Typically, when I use oxyclean in my fermenters, what comes out is pretty dirty, but the kegs are quite clean to begin with, so I will reuse that to clean stuff like sinks, but not to clean more brewing equipment. I have no idea if it's hard on the o-rings - they're consumables, and maybe if I didn't use oxyclean they'd last a little longer, but they seem to last a reasonable length of time, anyway.CorneliusAlphonse wrote: i bought a tub of dry stuff from wally mart, as it was the only place to get unscented. choose your devil, flowery smelling kegs or buying one item from walmart. i think everyone sells a powdered form.

I won't shop in Walmart for anything I can get elsewhere - with the demise of Zellers that's more frequent - but I haven't found the unscented oxyclean elsewhere.Dirt Chicken wrote:And you won't catch me in Walmart for anything

Unscented yes, the No Frills in Saint John NB, they had it for sale 2 weeks ago I think, or maybe it was 3 weeks ago. So I would think they would carry it in Halifax as well
