Timeline for feedback is excellent. Possibly some guys haven't followed the link above (it's painful following links on my phone) that mentioned that 70 results have been mailed out as of Monday and the final 10 have been sent to Ottawa for further judging.

Thanks! :cheers2:

Oh, snail mail, I thought you would be emailing contestants, that's why I was curious. No worries, thanks for the clarification.

From Facebook:
The Broadhead Brew Company Pro-Am is wrapping up over the week. Both the OBK location and the Broadhead Brewing company location were overwhelmed with the responses. OBK has sent out BJCP sheets for round one with at least one judge and one other (Pro-brewer or industry leader). If you do not receive one in the next few days and it was a OBK submission your sheets and samples were picked up the very next day personally by Broadhead Brewing to go to round two. Those brewers were not joking. 700Kms away and they picked up the round two winners twelve hours after judging.

Broadhead Brewing company submissions were not so easy. These guys are running a very tiny Craft Beer system non stop. It is a true Craft Beer system and time is very precious. The good news is they shut down today just to judge the submissions and drank beer all day. Kudos to taking your system offline to make this happen. I would like to personally thank Barry a BJCP Certified Judge who is gracious enough to take time over the next few weeks to make sure that location will have highly regarded feedback sent to them.

In the next few days we will announce the results. It has been no small feat. This competition ranked #4 in Canada for submissions and #3 for participants. We actually beat Toronto Beer Week by almost 50% participants with a three week warning! At the OBK location it was common for five individuals to debate the merits of a beer. The talent was that good. A personal thank you to the fine individuals who were kind enough to help. You know who you are!

Got my response in the mail today so i guess i'm not moving on to the next round. This beer was the only one I could send on short notice and my first competition ever. The beer was an ipa and really more of an american ipa but because of the low og i said it was an eng ipa. Was judged by 2 people, one recognized judge and one not. From judge 1 (rec) tech merit 4 out of 5 and intangibles 4 out of 5. Judge 2, 3 out of 5 and 3 out of 5. So hopefully do a little better next time but for my first time am very happy with results.
Drinking: Red Hook clone
Waiting on: Fruit beer

I would also keep in mind they are looking for a winter seasonal for this competition. An IPA would not likely meet that concept, even if it was a perfect example of the style! I guess all I'm really getting at, is sounds like you brewed a good beer, but may not have made it to the next round because of the type of beer you entered, rather than the quality of the beer itself.

Also, as an FYI - your choice to enter and American IPA as an English IPA based on low starting gravity may not have been wise. The distinction between American and English IPAs is more based on the hop varieties used. The low range of American IPA is 1.056 and English IPA is 1.050 - that's not much of a difference. If you brewed an IPA with an OG of 1.050, used all American hops, and it tastes like an American IPA, you will almost certainly score higher in the American IPA category (in spite of your OG being slightly low) than in the English IPA category.

A guy on the London Homebrew site said he entered two beers and only got results for 1, so was assuming the other got through. I believe he'd said it was an APA, so I'm not sure how strictly they're following the winter beers only rule.

Also, I'd agree with Jayme, but add that the English IPA would also be expected to be far more malty and caramely than the American.

2013 OntarioBeerKegs Homebrew Competition Results

First off we would like to thank the homebrewing community for a very successful homebrew competition. The amount and quality of entries exceeded all expectations. A big thank you to Broadhead Brewing also for putting up such a great grand prize of brewing the winning batch. The competition judging was held at two locations. Both spots spent an exhaustive amount of hours tasting these great beers. Narrowing down the final round was a difficult task, as the relaxed guidelines really opened up the competition to some very unique and experimental brews. A very sincere thank you to all the judges for their effort.

This was organized all very quickly when the opportunity came about. The number of participants were on the level of some competitions that have been going for years. This really set a bar for us and we hope to have you all back for next year if we have another competition as well as anyone who missed out this year because of the tight deadline. Broadhead Brewery took on the hard part of choosing the final winners out of a truly great bunch of final round entries.

2013 Homebrew Competition Winners

1st Place — Emil Niec’s Old Fruitcake Ale (Entry 0020)
2nd Place — Patrick Boisvenue’s Galaxyrise Amber Ale (Entry 0110)
3rd Place — Dennis Rainville & Raphael Turcotte’s White IPA (Entry 0043)

Broadhead Brewery noted that the final round just had too many excellent choices to be able to only choose one to brew. They are highly considering an “Invitational Series” because so many brews had extreme quality and impressed everyone so much. This means although your entry may not have placed, Broadhead may still call on you to invite you over for a brew day!

These are three of the many front runners that are being considered for such an event:

- JP Fournier’s Cherries in the Snow (Entry 0131)
- Ryan Smith & Ryan O’Donnel’s Ryan’s Awesome APA (Entry 0071)
- Renee Belanger & Sarah Belanger’s Frosted Elixer (Entry 0109)

Congratulations to all the winners and to those who will be part of the Invitational Series. Great beers all around. Entries dropped off or shipped to the Mitchell location should be receiving feedback soon, if they have not already. Entries dropped off in Ottawa can expect their feedback in the coming weeks.

Congrats to the winners :rockin:
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Anyone know the winners/any Brewnosers? I don't recognize the names. Congrats though - even if the winners won't read this! haha

Congrats to all the winners and thanks to obk and broad head for organizing. I got 3 of my 4 reports in the mail today. Not sure if that means one was a finalist or if it's just a Canada post issue. It was my saison. Definitely not a winter beer.

Maybe one of the Canada post employees smelled it during transit and decided to drink it!

Congrats to all the winners! Got my results back today. One judge and two other tasters. I'm happy with the comments, especially for the first time out.
