Free stir plate parts

Post by Jayme » Wed Nov 21, 2012 1:40 pm

I've got some parts to build stir plates that I'm looking to give away. I believe there are 4 'kits' that are nearly complete but still need some odds and ends and to be put together as a whole. On top of that, I also have a small box of 12V computer fans that could also be used for building one. If you're interested in picking one up, let me know! This is going to be a first come first serve thing - I am trying to free up some much needed space and can't wait around months on end for people to pick this stuff up. Obviously I won't tell two people at once they can have something and have them race to my apt, but if you can't come for 2 weeks and someone else can get it tomorrow, that's the way it's gonna go! I have had far too many no-shows in the past!

So... does that mean you want to pick up one of the 'kits'? If so, send an e-mail letting me know when you can come by.

If there are any free kits left, I'll grab one. Depending on where you live I can pick it up today.

I'm just giving away fans.. not any sort of voltage regulation. RAE is in Burnside.

I bought light dimmer switches to try and adjust the speed. Think these will do the trick, or should I go to RAE for rheostats? The dimmers were only $6, trying to do this on the cheap.

I think I paid less than $5 for a rheostat at the Source/RadioShack when I built mine.

Just a heads up, the $60 stir plate I got from OBK seems really nice! Works straight out of the box, adjustable speeds, nice heavy base. Can put on a demonstration tonight at my place. I'll let you know what sort of starter it makes in a couple months, ha.

Sure! I'd take two if you've got them, building one for LD as well.

You will need a second resistor to create the voltage divider using a potentiometer. Also ensure the pot is adequately rated so you don't burn it up!

Also, to answer Chalmer's question, a dimmer switch is a rheostat (well, the old school ones that are inexpensive are - some of the newer ones use PWM), and would work fine - since they're meant for 120Vac use there's no risk using it for 12Vdc (though a 120Vac rating does not mean you could also use 120Vdc).

It's not very hard/expensive to do. The dimmer switch route is good, or I just went on Ebay and bought a computer fan speed controller from China for a couple bucks.

Also, for anyone interested in one of the free fans I've got, I'll have them with me at Tim's tonight.

I don't know what size they are. The size really doesn't matter so much as the torque and RPM. Anyway - they're free. Either take one or don't!
