Re: SS Conical Fermenter
I recevied my stainless steel conical fermenter today. I've gotta do a thorough cleaning on it and also drill a 7/8" hole to install the thermometer. I'm very pleased with the construction of it and am looking forward to using it for the first time next week. It sure will make harvesting yeast easier. IMHO, the product was very much worth the money and I think Liverdance would agree with me.

Looks nice from here.
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter.

On a side note, do you think a holesaw would do the job for drilling the hole for the thermometer?

If it were me, I would use a Greenlee punch like this:canuck wrote:On a side note, do you think a holesaw would do the job for drilling the hole for the thermometer?

They tend to make a cleaner hole.

That or a step bit at the least. I'd be worried the hole saw might tear up your shiny conical a bit.Jayme wrote:If it were me, I would use a Greenlee punch like this:canuck wrote:On a side note, do you think a holesaw would do the job for drilling the hole for the thermometer?

Is anyone toying with the idea of putting together a group buy on Conicals again?

I know this is very late reply, but does the Company have a web site that I can browse to have a look at the Conicals? I'm interested in getting something that will do 75l (16.5 Gallon(UK), 20 Gallon(US)).
Cheers

I used a 3/4" step drill and then finished it off with a Dremel tool ... someone out there may have a 7/8" step drillGAM wrote:Does anyone have a 7/8" punch to put a weldless fitting in a keggel?

Not much extra work at all - you are really only taking an extra 1/16" all around. Just kept the bit moving around the hole to keep it round.

Re: SS Conical Fermenter
for future referance, what's the appropriate bit for that? I had a bitch of a time, but I'm not sure it was the right bit
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

I use a 7/8" step bit. Center punching and starting a small pilot whole first with a smaller bit helps a lot. Having some cutting oil on hand for the step bit is good too, the bit won't tear up the SS as bad and the SS won't tear up the bit.

+1 on the center punch, pilot hole and cutting oil. A steady stream of water will work in a pinch as well to keep everything cool.jeffsmith wrote:I use a 7/8" step bit.
