X-COM

Post by Graham.C » Tue Oct 16, 2012 5:09 pm

Anyone play the original? Anyone play the remake? I have to say I am impressed with how loyal the remake is to the original. Its easier, but only slightly, which is nice in this age of games that require as much critical thought as a Hollywood blockbuster.

Don't know anything about it, but thanks for pointing it out. The trailer looks cool - looking for a good game for the winter.

I played xcom all the time. Xcom terrors from the deep was even tougher than the original.

Sure was. Both are great games, although I don't think I ever beat terror from the deep. Have you played the new one yet?

you can get the original free online to see if you like it. The new one is a little smoothed out, but in doing so they got rid of some of the cool micromanagement stuff in the original.

Didn't even know a new one existed.
Was a fun game but difficult. I'll have to check out the new one

Always enjoyed Firakis games. Well, Civ Colonization was boring and Civ V was a huge let down despite the improved combat and switch to hex-based map.

Original was awesome. I was so addicted to that game.

I'll have to check out the new one.

Agreed. Civ 4 is one of my favorite games of all time, 5 not so much.

Spent last weekend with the new XCOM, since the original ate up a lot of my teenage years. The graphics are great, cut scenes are extensive and using the unreal engine means it runs fast on even older computers. Found the single player version lacking some direction, with lots of options on what to build and research but no real consequences for the choices made.

SPOILERS: Wish it had a unified inventory/sales system (so you could see everything you have and sell it after it's no longer useful ie. old guns and armour), a more treed system for recruit development, with special bonuses for loading up as a medic or recon or whatever and finally the ability to stun/capture any alien. Nothing sucks more than spending three hours manoeuvring into a position to stun some alien you accidentally killed a dozen reloads over to find out it's unstunnable for no apparent reason.

Otherwise a fairly good game. Maybe I'll just go play a round right now :)

Yes, I'm thoroughly addicted now. I like that it's not spelled out the first few times through. It's like civ, learning when you need what to adapt to the problems you are facing is part of the game. It's really fun, although next time through I'm turning off auto-save. It seems really cheap to just load when you lose a star solder.

I am playing it on PS3 and I've started to notice some bugs (still my first play though). Some of my guys are permanently "on mission". I googled the problem and it looks like lots of people are having it. If I was playing on a harder difficulty I would likely be screwed, but as it stands I'm ok. I hope they fix this with a patch soon.
