Plate filtering kegged beer

Post by durtydogg » Sun Sep 30, 2012 9:39 pm

Hey Folks:
Any tips on useing plate filters to clear beer.I've got a wine/beer filter and some cloudy extract beer. From what i've read online they tend to leak and/or clog.I plan on just using a single pass with a course filter.
The beer still is cloudy when chilled and I don't think its a chill haze.Ive done 29 batches ( all extract or extract w/steeping grains) and have never had this issue. Even nottingham dosn't drop out.
I think it might be the wort .Using older Barons kits that I got a deal on and subbing in fresh yeast.

Thanks

I think time is the best option.

I used a plate filter before on beer, and sold it. Waste of time. Plugged way to quickly.

D-dog

I have a "Whole house" filter body with a new filter and fittings if you want to try that.

I never used it.

I've used the Whole House filter setup before. Worked quite well, no clogging or leaking issues. Although in the end I really question as it was worth the hassle.

check my 'simulated lagering' post. I filtered my oktoberfest lager with 10-micron plates after cold crashing using a vacuum pump, (converted fridge compressor).

Next time I might try purging the carboy with CO2 first to minimize oxidation.

Thanks to all for the replies. Trying Kieselsol finings. I’m sure time would have worked as well, but I had the plate filter given to me and wanted to give it a shot.
Since I’m new to kegging (and lovin'it....last bottle session totaled 200!!)couldn’t resist the urge.

Cheers Bob

Mike "Tasty" McDole of the Brewing Network/Can You Brew It is a big proponent of filtering. There's a whole episode of Brew Strong on the subject. Here's his quick reply to a question like yours: he uses an off the shelf plate filter and 7 micron filter (after cold crashing): http://www.thebrewingnetwork.com/forum/ ... ?f=&t=6878" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I've used my minijet a few times when kegging...just remember to place remaining beer in bottle bucket as the filtration pads will strip residual yeast required for bottle priming. The filtered, kegged beer is clear and tasty. My bottle conditioned beer is excellent with a different character. If you can't wait and want tasty beer relatively quickly - especially after lager waiting - the filter is excellent. I've also used a Superjet at my friends U Brew after brewing similar brews at ale times with excellent results.
PS - apologies for the late arrival
At Bat: several Czech Pils
On Deck: Cream Ale
In the Hole: Kolsch
Clean Up: Tall Ships Ale clones
On tap: Propeller Pils, Festa Cream Ale
