My thought on doing only late additions is to maximize aroma/flavour. 60min addition won't tell you much about the character of the hop - hell that's where I usually hide varieties I've tried but didn't like much. But I too ultimately don't care that much. Perhaps we could put it to a poll?

Edit - how exactly does one start a poll...?

I think the OP has to edit the OP, and select poll at the bottom. Otherwise we do a new thread.

Well luckily I can easily harass Gavin to add a poll. Won't see him until Wednesday though. Anyhow, for now perhaps base decisions expecting a high hopping rate or just hold off until we've voted on a recipe.

Since the point of this is to examine them side by side by side, would those participating be able to set aside a bottle of each for the SAAZ folks (& possibly the Aleanders)? I doubt we would all be able to get into the city for the same meeting. I'm sure we'd be able to send an equal volume back the other way to make things even, if that's what it takes.

That sounds more than fair. We just need a mule.

so the recipe that Jayme and I used on the most recent single hop beer we made was:
2-row: 5.5kg (~86.5%)
munich: 500g (~8.5%)
wheat malt: 200g (~3.5%)
caramunich 120: 100g (~1.8%)
that landed us at 1.056, which seems a pretty reasonable number to shoot for. anybody have any thoughts or changes?

Should we change the caramunich 120 to something that is available at NG for ease of access to everyone? I think they have standard caramunich which is 56 I think?
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Good point - maybe even just a crystal malt instead. Most people will have some kicking around and if not, at least NG sells that stuff in bulk (caramunich 60 comes in those expensive pre-weighed bags).

Yes - I would have caramunich 60 if NCM hadn't fucked up. I can order from NG if that's what we go with, but I definitely have crystal malt on hand.

I have some crystal at home. I'll let you know what I have. We can share.

Munich and wheat I don't have.

C60 instead of CM60 should be fine. I would prefer to leave in the munich and wheat for various reasons - both are available in the bins at NG so that shouldn't be a show stopper for anyone that doesn't keep them on hand. But I guess if enough people are opposed to that notion, we could vot on that too.

I personally don't think that wheat is necessary at all. What does it do for that beer?

I'm in...

My inital thoughts on the wheat malt were negative because I don't have any but.. SOB... BCS has 227 g of wheat malt listed in the American Pale Ale, India Pale Ale and Imperial Pale Ale(Pliny the Elder)... no reference in the write ups as to why... someone should ask NASH if he uses it in his..

If the point of doing this is to compare the hops, then I'd vote for a simpler grain bill. Say 2 row and medium crystal. If we get too crazy with specialty malts etc it's going to muddy it up.

My comment was in reference to a discussion I had with Nash about the subject. We didn't see what the wheat added flavour wise. Maybe for head/body? At any rate, i don't think it's necessary.
