An email I received on behalf of the club

Post by Jimmy » Mon Feb 21, 2011 2:06 pm

I am posting this here for the group to see if there is any interest. I will let him know that I passed it on to everyone to.see if there is interest.
Hi-

I work with the Harrison Lewis Centre (Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=wal ... 3466998434; website: http://www.harrisonlewiscentre.org/) in Port Joli, NS.  We are an environmental education/homestead arts learning center with bunk facilities, a large meeting house and laboratory, and 550 acres of coastal beauty.  We like to host workshops that are about do-it-yourself, self reliant skills.  We feel that beer is necessary, and that everyone should have brewing skills.  We've been at this for 3 years and are always looking to expand our reach towards people's various interests.  Are you folks interested in putting on a workshop about genuine, from-scratch, brewing?

Just an idea- throwing it out there. Please contact us if you are interested.

Seems like an excellent opportunity to promote our hobby & get others involved. However, there are way more experienced brewers than myself that should be involved before me.

If something got off the ground & I'm available, I'd certainly be willing to help out/get involved.

Like Andy, there are way more experienced brewers than me - but I'm happy to help out after April 1 (it's 14 hour days, 7 day weeks until then).
Currently on tap: Nothing!
In keg: Still nothing.
In Primary: Doggone American Rye Pale Ale

This sounds like fun. I'd be up for it. We've been talking about a learn-to-brew day, so maybe this is the venue for it.

Well if there is enough interest and someone wants to take the lead on this feel free. I most likely won't be taking part, and as others have said, there are plenty of experienced brewers on here that would be better suited than myself.

If we follow along with the AHA, the first Saturday in November is 'Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day' and the first Saturday in May is 'National Homebrew Day' - although neither of those days is particularly appealing (weather-wise). My wife is pretty tolerant, but I wouldn't dare try and disappear Mother's Day weekend for a beer-related activity... :slap:

I have some interest in this. It looks like a nice place to spend a few days.

i can certainly lend a helping hand... but since I'm still learning myself, I'm definitely not the one to teach others.

There seems to be enough interest for us to explore this further. I'm willing to communicate with them to get a clearer understanding of what they expect from us and brainstorm a proposal on here. Jimmy, can you forward me the actual e-mail?

It would be nice if we could develop this into an annual event, something like the NB brew weekend.

That sounds like a great spot for a Nova Scotia version of Big Strange Brew.

Can someone give me a description of Big Strange Brew? Info about it seems to be scarce on the web.

I'll get you a link.

I have lots of better pics for that as well. Those site pics are old. It is actually quite a family event, my kids have it planned for the next year almost from the time we leave on Sunday.

Has there been any further discussion about this?

Sounds like a great idea. Happy to help, but if it will be about all grain brewing I think I would be more interested in attending!
Also, reminds me of this kijiji add I saw the other day. I'm assuming the add was not put up by anyone here or we would have heard about it...
http://halifax.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell ... Z264317461
Serving:
-Strong Bitter
-Double Chocolate Espresso Stout
Fermenting/Conditioning:
-Robust Porter
-Raspberry Wheat
-American Pale Ale

I had a preliminary back and forth with the guy who e-mailed you. He deferred some of my questions to the guy who actually came up with the idea, but that guy hasn't replied yet. I'm told he's busy with other things so I'm waiting for him. Once I've clarified what they're interested in and get some parameters I'll bring it back here for discussion.

I'd be into lending a helping hand. I know enough to teach some basics, but as said above their are way better brewers in the club (which I would be happy to learn from as well).
