Need to source a butcher block

Post by mr x » Tue Apr 10, 2012 4:02 pm

OK, I need to source a butcher block, or build one myself, for my new Primo table (outdoor). Maple is my first choice, and I would like it to be a minimum of 3 inches thick, to a maximum of 6". Overall dimensions are 2'x2'. What ideas are out there?

Would love something like this myself to possibly make a small 'island on wheels' for the kitchen.

I wonder if The Red Light Equipment in Truro would have anything that could be salvaged or refinished... wouldn't want anything too heavily used but some restraunts are only a flash in the pan and you could find something useful. That would be amazing for your grill...

Drop by Big Eric's on Lady Hammond - they had lots of pretty new ones there last time I was in, try Jessom's and Advantage in Dartmouth too. One of the pub owners told me that 3 yrs ago the health inspectors made the commercial kitchens replace the wooden blocks with teflon and apparently Advantage had a shitload of used stuff :cheers2:

Geez, health inspectors... Haven't they read the literature? Wooden surfaces are far safer than Teflon. Teflon is really good for keeping sterile until you put a knife to it.
Currently on tap: Nothing!
In keg: Still nothing.
In Primary: Doggone American Rye Pale Ale

Not bad, I'm going to call them for a quote on something custom.

FYI, Advantage in Dartmouth is absolutely insane. I've never seen so much used equipment. :lolno:

I can slice an end off this log if you don't mind birch.
I may be able to find a piece of maple?

I'd take that if the dimensions are reasonably big, table is 24" deep. Birch is fine, it was be my second choice. How thick can I get, ...6"?

It's approximately 18-20" in diameter but I'll have to check that. A 6" slice I can do. I think I'm going to try to make bar stools out of the rest of it.

I think that might be too small. I would need a piece that fits tight from front to back, preferable in the 30" range so it could be trimmed a bit - not an easy find. Thanks for the offer though!

My brother in-law runs that place, but I've never been inside. I know he won't haggle with me so I've never had the desire to go.
