I meant that they already conceded that they can't get local hops.

My point was not about not be able to get them (although that shows poor planning), but the fact that intending to run a brewery on locally grown hops will put you into CCRA in a heartbeat. At current pricing. Maybe that will change, but I'm still betting on a flood of mature hop crowns for sale in 5 years.

Was just into Cash&Carry in NG. They sell very nice and shiny full Pepsi kegs for $44.99. Had about 20. No idea what people do with them when they are empy.....

Their blogs and webpage sure make it sound like they are pushing the "sustainability" aspect. Trying to find a niche in a niche market? Wonder how being the nichiest will translate into $/bottle?

Sustainability is a loaded term, which means very different things to different people. They appear to be attempting to balance environmental and resource sustainability with economic (and ultimately business) sustainability. My guess is the latter will usually trump the former and the sustainability aspect will become more of a marketing gimmick than niche marketing.

What about New Belgium? Is that all greenwashing? Serious question, since they appear to have a pretty good model, at least for an expanding regional brewery.

I'll be honest, I never heard of New Belgium before that post. However, given their location, I'd wager they have a much larger consumer base of the organic, granola-eating variety who might make that model viable. And I'm saying that with a lot of friends out west who are self-proclaimed organic, granola-eaters.

Yeah, and they aren't the only people doing that, in the US. The start-up costs for sustainable are high, and I see shoestring on the site. It looks to be gimmick to me in this case.

Don't get me wrong! There are a lot of good business reasons to divert your waste stream. Especially so if you can get compensated for your waste.

Oh, definitely. I'd rather see more info about the beer before I get exited here. It's got a 'Spearhead' feel about it, not exactly the same, but for me it's product first. Not what I see here, but it's still early....

But how is he planning on hiring a brewmaster? Me confused. But good luck to him if he can make the numbers work, and grow it. At the tiny nano size, it was way too much work for the payoff for me, unless you were using it as a short term marketing tool towards a bigger operation. Have you met him? It would be good to get him out for a brew.

No deposit necessary? They sound like a deal, with syrup still in them. To use the syrup, do we have to push through carbonate water?
