Yeast:
- 2xM66 Mangrove Jack Hophead Ale
Notes:
This was the second beer I brewed on my Grainfather. I am somewhat shocked at the actual vs est OG on the Grainfather as I was consistently within 3 SG of target on my old turkey fryer BIAB setup.
One mistake I made on the first 2 batches was dumping the entire sparge water heater, but I later found out that the sight glass doesn't include the deadspace so that's about 2-3L extra which accounts for some of my missed OG.
Another potential issue is that I was using Noble Grape's mill for 1/2 the grain, and my new one for the other half. I need to change the settings on mine to be a bit finer, and in the future only use it so I can be consistent.
On a more recent brew I was 5 SG short of my target on a 1.051 batch, so I'm closer. I think I just need to adjust my efficiency a bit so that my setup is calibrated.

Re: December 14, 2021
Nice brew with notes of citrus from the hops and coffee / dark chocolate from the malts.
What was your IBU estimate? I'd guess between 50 and 60.

Sorry about the crappy labels haha, I see that you fixed it
.
You're pretty bang on, it was 67.5 IBU but it's probably closer to 60 with the extra water. What's really weird is that the same recipe on the grainfather app says 58.5 IBU, I hate how BeerSmith and grainfather with wildly different values for the same recipe even though I'm using the official grainfather profile in BeerSmith.

Nice night cap for Tuesday night. I really enjoyed this one. Perfect carb, head retention and bitterness. My very non expert advise would be ; next time drop the roasted barley and up the black printz or add it in at the end of the mash. This will cut back on the roastyness and let all of those hops shine. But like I said , it was great. Thanks for the share

Super dark with an easily rousable tan head.
I enjoy the spicy/citrus aroma of the hops with the roast although not as bold as I would expect for a double dry hop. Bitterness is nice and not astringent as some black IPAs can be. Dark malts do steal the spotlight for flavors initially including some anise but the hops are welcomingly blossoming as it warms to a nice lingering lemon-liquorice after taste. Reminds me of an espresso with a piece of lemon. Thanks!

This is not a style I’m usually big on, but this is more to my liking than many because it favors the roast and some caramel flavors a little bit and because it gets that licorice thing going that i can only imagine is the intersection of hops and roast. Thanks for the reminder that I can like this style.

A nice entry in what can be a difficult style to get right. Really tasty beer.

This was super tasty. A great beer to mill grains with! (Ok, I was in a good mood anyway).
Very balanced, delightfully hoppy, with some nice roastiness to it. Great mouthfeel and head retention also (good ole carapils I reckon)
