FAQ
Where is my local Gahan House?
We have Gahan House locations in Charlottetown, Halifax, Saint John, Moncton and Fredericton.
How do I submit a beer into the Maritime Home Brew Challenge?
To submit a brew you must provide up to 6 bottles of the beer ~ 355mL or larger. You must drop it off by October 27th to your local Gahan House with a completed submission form. There is also a $30 submission fee to enter a beer into this challenge that must be paid upon drop off.
How do I pay my submission fee?
You can pay with cash, credit or debit at the Gahan House location you are dropping your beer off to. Once this is paid, you will receive a complimentary Maritime Home Brew Challenge t-shirt (not bad, eh?!).
Should I label my entries?
Yes – please put your name, your beer name and beer style on each beer bottle you drop off. You must drop off at least 6 355mL or larger bottles.
Are there any beer recipe rules?
Only two. Your beer must qualify as one of three styles: IPA (any style), Mixed Fermented/ Sour, Stout and a portion of every brew needs to be partially mashed or steeped.
Are there any beer recipe rules?
Only two. Your beer must qualify as one of three styles: Lager/ Pilsner, Hoppy Ale/ Saison and a portion of every brew needs to be partially mashed or steeped.
Can anyone submit a beer?
Yes! As long as you are not a certified brewer or brew for your career (and you are over the age of 19).
Can multiple people submit a beer together?
Absolutely! We’re all about partnerships. The person/ team listed on the submission form claims the prize.
What are the prizes?
The Grand Champion (best overall beer) will receive $1,000 cash and a limited edition can release in partnership with the PEI Brewing Company and The Gahan House.
The top 5 in each style will receive the following:
1st – $500 cash
2nd – $250 cash
3rd – $100 cash
4th – $100 Murphy Hospitality Group Gift Card
5th – $50 Murphy Hospitality Group Gift Card
When are prizes awarded?
Prizes will be awarded at our Maritime Home Brew Challenge weekend November 8-9th, 2019 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island at the original Gahan House! More information regard- ing weekend itinerary will be out soon, but it will be all about brewing.

Hard to pass up with all the cash prizes. Just hope they do better with judges this year...the feed back last year was embarrassing on their part.

Agreed, three categories with that amount of $$$ in each style is pretty damn good! But as a brewer you’d want a little more constructive feedback, it’s almost worth more than the cash prize!mckay75 wrote:Hard to pass up with all the cash prizes. I have a golden sour sitting around that I might throw some fruit at, would be a perfect excuse for me to finally bottle it! Haha

Re: Maritime Home Brew Challenge
Not good when even the FAQ is confusing. IPA, mixed fermentation/sour, and stout listed as the 'styles', yet lager/pilsner, hoppy ale/saison listed in the recipe rules.

It looks like they cut and paste info from lasts years comp in the FAQ. This year is brew any type of IPA you want, any stout and a mixed fermentation/sour.

Major confusion, I hoping to brew a saison in the next coming week and would love to enter.......If that is actually an acceptable style.

Re: Maritime Home Brew Challenge
Paul is right, I confirmed with PEIBC/Gahan, they missed removing last year's styles by mistake. Having said that, a mixed ferm saison would fall into the acceptable category of IPA, mixed fermentation/sour, and stout.
(Ignore what's currently on the site, they took off the correct one and left last year's! But I have emailed them again to 100% confirm. They may need to allow the incorrect styles as well, seeing as they've let this go wrong for a while, so some folks may have brewed already)

Re: Maritime Home Brew Challenge
Not sure what's going on with this competition, but a lack of announcement and inconsistencies on the only page with any details is a little bizarre. If you're doing mixed ferm you'd presumably want to give people as much notice as possible for anyone who doesn't already have something brewed.

Re: Maritime Home Brew Challenge
I had a nice beer we had already brewed for this, so I figured why not?!? I dropped off my entry in Monton last night... It took me a little while for them to process it - they weren't sure how to enter it in the cash register. They said I was the first person from Moncton to drop off an entry. No t-shirts in stock yet.

Re: Maritime Home Brew Challenge
Odds are good then! Mind you, judging isn't until the end of Oct/beginning of November, so there are some who haven't already brewed, I'm sure).

Re: Maritime Home Brew Challenge
Not really...you'll probably have great odds to win a cash prize
Last year the feedback from judges was poor at best, hence my sarcasm!

Re: Maritime Home Brew Challenge
As an update, as a few entrants have asked me here and directly, I haven't heard back about the state of judging. Of course, I don't expect or especially want to always be the go-to judging guy, but I had offered and they said they'd get back to me. Who knows! But I'm with Cam, odds are good to win some cash, there aren't a ton of entries! And if you brew with Kveik, you could enter the Big Spruce Comp, details announced today on FB!

Yup, Big Spruces is pretty much identical to the one Everwood Ave did. Should get some great beers out of it. Now do I attempt to tweak my Coconut IPA or go another path...decisions

Re: Maritime Home Brew Challenge
A bit disappointed in the Big Spruce comp objective this year...have used voss so much over the past year that I really have no interest in using it again. May end up sitting this one out.

Re: Maritime Home Brew Challenge
Agreed that was my same thought, since I just did the Propeller comp a few months back. Unless I could get my hands on another Kveik strain (really want to try a pseudo-lager with Oslo) I'll sit this one out as well.

Re: Maritime Home Brew Challenge
I'm guessing Big Spruce just wasn't aware it was already done earlier this year. Sucks, hopefully it doesn't affect turnout too bad since the format in this case is the same and the same strain. I'd almost want to suggest they try to use one of Escarpments other Kveik offerings, or even one of their test strains that they're doing as part of the "Kveik Ring" program they're using to trial strains through homebrewers/pro brewers. Would be a bit more similar to their pincherry competition in that everyone would be using a strain they hadn't brewed with before.

Sadly not, the FB page says its Kveik Voss so exactly the same as the Everwood compConanTroutman wrote: ↑Thu Oct 03, 2019 11:35 amI'm guessing Big Spruce just wasn't aware it was already done earlier this year.
