No CO2 during fermentation scaring me

Post by BiersalBrewery » Tue Jan 29, 2019 5:30 pm

so I made an American ipa 2 weeks ago and I check every day for CO2 coming out of the bubbler (using conical fermenter and yes I turned the valve to let the yeast into the collection jar), so after the first week of noting on recommendation from everwood staff he said add another pack of yeast (both were wyeast us05 smack packs) so the second on went in Saturday and still nothing? How do I know if this is a batch to dump or continue to bottle next week? also what could be the reasoning behind this?

you could take a specific gravity reading, see if some fermentation has occurred. It's possible that you just have a bad seal on your lid and the CO2 is exiting that way

I'm pretty sure that I'm tightening it pretty tight, I'm using the rubber ring to make it a tight seal.

Either way a gravity reading will tell you if fermentation has taken place

Second what Dan said, don’t go based on airlock activity and take a gravity reading.

I had the same thing happen where it stopped bubbling after the second day. I left it alone for the week until dry hopping and I grabbed a sample at the time. It went from 1.066 to 1.006 without any indication of gassing. I'll have a sample port installed on the FastFerment on the next brew.

Yep, I've had beers ferment out without noticing the bubbles too

This a fastferment? Id be more surprised if mine actually made a dam air seal.

Try doubling your gaskets...I used the cheesy original foam gasket under the replacement silicone one the sent me...last brew was on for nine months and beer turned out fine...so...air must’ve been blocked out I’m thinking 🤔
At Bat: several Czech Pils
On Deck: Cream Ale
In the Hole: Kolsch
Clean Up: Tall Ships Ale clones

I got the new Rubber doughnut one from fasterment that is supposed to fix it. Think I'm just leaking around the air lock now. Jammed a 1/2" tube in the hole instead, holds air better. I hate it in general anyways only gets used when I have too many beers going. Aways get trub stuck, and I hate plastic.

I find it works ok...I mainly try to use it that way too and for ales or wine. I use my stainless fermenters as they’ll fit in my lagering fridge and the FF won’t.
