Re: Black Box Challenge
No, we all present first, and then they'll taste and judge them all.
Ugh, I have to start putting my presentation together.

Re: Black Box Challenge
I've had my presentation done for a while, but I should probably go over it in case I missed anything. Anyone have pictures of the cinnamon left in the bag? I was debating on adding one, but I lost the cinnamon sticks the day after I picked up my kit... I'm guessing it went in the garbage.

Hey all -- couple notes:
-Tons of free parking in the area (no meter maids on Sundays)
-Brewers' drop-off is the SIDE DOOR (under the 1672 Barrington St sign), hoping you'll drop off before noon
-Doors open at noon!

Re: Black Box Challenge
Awesome event. Sitting around talking to other Brewers and hearing what they did was great (and also humbling). Sounds like there were a pile of good beers. I hope this style of competition becomes a regular thing.
Big congratulations to LiverDance and also the others who placed and got mentions! And a big thanks to Boxing Rock for running a great and unique competition!

Re: Black Box Challenge
Definitely the most fun I've had prepping for a beer comp! Congrats LD, thanks Boxing Rock and Stillwell!
Keith, FYI that thing on top is a Majorette. My sister was big into majorette competitions growing up and we have literally over a hundred trophies like that at home lol.

Re: Black Box Challenge
Thanks guys, that was a pretty awesome competition! Boxing Rock really did a great job making a creative comp for us and Stillwell was an awesome spot to host it and spend the afternoon. There were some seriously awesome Ideas in this one and I loved talking process and product with everyone!

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Re: Black Box Challenge
Congrats to Brian, Mark, and Jason on the excellent showing. Thanks to Boxing Rock for putting this on, and to all of you for taking part. Once you receive your sheets, feel free to contact if you have any questions. Email is best.
Speaking of sheets, be sure to email Boxing Rock to request them; they'll be digitized in the next couple of days.

Re: Black Box Challenge
Congratulations to the winners. I really wish we could have had the whole place and a mic for the presentations. It would have been nice to know what all those dark beers that kept getting judged were. I think there were only a handful of light beers.
Also I would like to know how to sour a beer with no souring yeast or probiotics?

Re: Black Box Challenge
Add some un-mashed grain to the wort after the mash is done, and keep the temp warm (100-120F). This provides a good environment for the lacto that's naturally on the grain husk to grow.
