Can be more than one use.
Do you reuse barrels after you’ve aged a batch?

Ron Jeffries, Jolly Pumpkin Brewing Company
Reusing barrels is the way that we are able to build up the wild yeast populations, which is why we use the barrels.

Vinnie Cilurzo, Russian River Brewing Company
We have sort of our own barrel program, which goes like this: for Temptation, Supplication and soon Consecration, all of those beers are aged in specific barrels with a specific wine type in them. Because we intend to pull some of the wine flavor from the barrel, it is important for us to bring in fresh barrels every year. With these three beers, we tend to call out 40% of the barrels each year and bring in 40% new barrels (that is, new to us). Then, we take the old barrels that have absolutely no oak or wine left in them and move them over to the Beatification, which we want to have no oak or wine flavor. With Beatification, we are only using the wood to harbor the funk.

In our new brewery we are building right now, I’m having trouble getting white wine barrels, and for some reason I have been overrun with Pinot Noir barrels from all of my winemaker friends. So, as it looks, in late 2009, we’ll have lots of Supplication and very little Temptation. Once we use up the barrels over the following few years, a lot of these barrels will be turned into Beatification barrels.

Steve Breezley, Avery Brewing Company
Yes. We especially like some of our wine barrels that have developed certain sour producing bacteria and we use that to our advantage aging some of our wacky “Belgiany” stuff.

Scott Vaccaro, Captain Lawrence Brewing Company
Sometimes we reuse barrels, but usually for sour beers only.

John Egan, Stone Brewing Company
I like to use the barrels several times and make notes on how much oak character is still left. Most often I will rack the beer out of a barrel and refill it with another beer on the same day. Even if barrels are spent of any oak character, they can still be put to good use. You can add oak alternatives, funky wild yeasts — or use them in your garden for decoration.

Eric Wallace, Left Hand Brewing Company
We use our barrels a few times – until wood flavor dissipates.

No, but if you ever got tired of it, I bet it would be awesome to smoke with.

I think the best way to proceed is first finding out what Glenora can provide, then guage interest from the whole group and determine what the batch sizes could/should be based on that.

It would be interesting to know the price of the barrels - maybe us marsh-dwellers can do one too.
I could be talked into this, but we need more then the three of us marsh-dwellers. I'm not sure I would know what to do with 20 gallons of barley wine each. Even 10 seems like a lot of wood aged beer. I would also be interested in a wine, or a port, barrel over a scotch barrel. The only beers I have had aged in scotch barrels end up tasting like watered down scotch. A good Canadian whiskey barrel might be nice too. 40 creek makes a damn fine spirit and if they are selling I could pick it up in December when I am in the area.
True, it certainly would be a lot, but if its a cellar-able (is that a word) beer you plan to keep for ~5yrs 10 gallons may be barely enough! If you can get your hands on a 40 Creek barrel, I'm game.

I'd do 5 gallons. I don't have the capacity to do 10 gals unless I brew twice.
You can brew on my system if you wish.

Nah, screw it, I'll brew twice. Thanks anyway.

Same here! The only conundrum being a temperature-controlled place to store it…

If so...

385/4 = 96.25 per bbl
96.25/4 = 24.07 per 55l of beer

24.07 if you are doing 10 gallons
12.04 if you are doing 5 gallons

I'd like to be in on the barrell project If there is room.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

$385 is just the shipping. They are $95 each for the barrels, so about $200 each (there is tax on shipping, ggrrrrrrr).

Glenora actually uses the same used JD barrels, but I think they probably buy/sell them at better prices. Jmac is on that, and we'll see what they have to say. I think we could get more than one brew out of a barrel, so that cuts the cost. Or go solera style and and use it for 30 years, lol...

Glenora sells their used BBLs for $50 each, I bought some from them before. Also Advantage Equipment in Dartmouth bought all they had last spring and was reselling them for $50 each, I talked to the guy and he said he had wet sealed ones. Anyways, the trouble with Glenora is they only unload them once, maybe twice per year.

Might be a better idea to call some of the Wineries.

Nothing from Glenora. No reposnses to my emails or voicemails.

A while back, on Greg's tip, I did check out the ones at Advantage. They ones they had at the time looked pretty sketchy. I'll slide by there on Monday to see what the current scoop is.

I worked near there one year, and I remember seeing them being stored outside - so depending how long they've had them, there'd probably be some issues from that

Some older info I had collected:
http://canadianoakbarrels.com/html/our_products.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Hi Robert,

Blomidon Estate Winery has premium oak barrels available for purchase.
These sturdy barrels hold 225 l. and approximately weigh 48 kg.

Still perfectly good for storage of wine or for decorative planters and barrel furniture. They would also make a great rain barrel to water your garden with.

Depending on the barrel, prices vary $100.00 - $150.00 plus tax. Sold as is where is.

Ok Homebrew Brothers,

I went to Advantage yesterday to have a look at their Glenora barrels and they are the same ones I looked at last spring.

The scoop;
1) 45 Gallon Glenora Whiskey (barrels originally used at Jack Daniels)
2) 35" high, 27" bilge, 23" face
3) $50 each, cash and carry

The guy who helped me yesterday said that they have had them for about 14-16 months. They have been repeatedly rented out and returned by local production companies for set props.
They have been stored outside since received and together we weren't able to find any that were still sealed. The pictures are of the best condition one I could find.

So, what do you guys think? We can't go wrong with the price although I'm still concerned over the condition. I don't mind going through every one to find the best.

In the meantime, I'll continue to try to talk to a live person at Glenora.

Ok Fellas, some success, just got off the phone with Bob Scott, Executive Partner at Glenora.

Bob tells me that they may have a couple of 'wet' barrels for us, $100 each plus tax. I've spoken for two, he's checking with the warehouse to confirm what they have available and will call me tomorrow.

Stay tuned........

I say we pass on the old as ass barrels. The $50 looks pleasing for a price, but I don't want to be risking my beer to save $10 or $20.

I hope Glenora comes through for us! We may be able to get something good happening here!
