Growler lid with ball lock connection

Post by bandarker » Tue Apr 07, 2015 12:55 pm

Hey all,

Bought a growler last night and thought if there was a way to supply CO2 to it I could keep it longer. Anyone had any experience or know of sources for a growler cap with a gas ball lock?

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I have three of these, one single wall, two double wall. Not a ball lock though, Schrader valve. They work well.

Please, please, please, be careful! I don't want to be reading "Local man sustains cuts to jugular while pressurizing glass vessel" in tomorrow's paper! Be sure to keep the pressure low, and/or rig up a relief valve. Even temperatures changes (ie, in a warm car) can get the gas pressure up quite high.

Good point Chris, maybe it would be smart to pressurize it in a canvas growler bag for safety.

Id be careful too..A buddy tried this with a SS growler that had the tire valve on the cap, using one of the bike filler co2 rigs, the cap blew off, smoked his hand and dented the ceiling.

After posting in this thread, the company that I mention above has contacted me to let me know that they have redesigned the growler top with a pressure relief valve. I'll be getting replacement tops for mine.

Sounds like the only safe way to go with these. Did they mention the blow off pressure of the prv?

The company is saying the pressure relief valve will release at 2.3 bar (33.4 psi). But said they are in the final design phase so they wouldn't be available for a little while yet.
