Bumping this topic from the real world into the virtual world....
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

Gotta call into Glenora and haven't heard back on availability. I'll torture them again tomorrow....

If that's the case you must let us all in on what it is.

I am thinking it's a "group buy" on barrels from http://www.glenoradistillery.com

I think the idea was any interested chips in towards 1 barrel, then we all brew up a barleywine or something and put it in the barrel for a while, then divvy up the beer later. I might be wrong though?

I know I've had a discussion along these lines with a few of you. I'm most definitely interested

I thought I was sitting right beside you when Johnny Mac, X, & KeggerMeister (I think) talked about this at Nash's birthday party. Maybe you were just there in my imagination. There was a substantial quantity of high-proof beer (except for that accidental "Keith's Harvest").
Currently on tap: Nothing!
In keg: Still nothing.
In Primary: Doggone American Rye Pale Ale

It's sounding familiar now that people describe it. I guess I should have clued in to the fact that X called it 'The barrel project' and not 'A barrel project'.

That's the plan. A few of us (X, Chalmers, Nick, Me, etc) had discussed this a while back, getting our hands on a fresh whisky barrel and doing a collaboration brew. All involved would brew 10 gallons to the same recipe at home and then fill up the barrel.

Once I get my shit together with Glenora, we can figure out who wants to be involved and go from there. The barrels are big so logistically, storage becomes a challenge.....

I'm still in.
Can you remind us of the dimensions? Does someone have a dedicated cool room that could handle it?

I could be in, depending on the recipe.

My basement has a cold room, although it's very musty.

I'd do 5 gallons. I don't have the capacity to do 10 gals unless I brew twice.

It's not out of the question to have 5 galloners participate. The principle reason I said 10 each is the original conversations were all with 10 gallon brewers.

I think the best way to proceed is first finding out what Glenora can provide, then guage interest from the whole group and determine what the batch sizes could/should be based on that.

It would be interesting to know the price of the barrells - maybe us marsh-dwellers can do one too.

I have offered my basement. It is relatively clean, unfinished and a good temp for the barrel. I have some 2x4s and junk we could build a stand with.
Let's do this thing.

What are they, 220 liters? That is 50l x5 for 250l to ferment and rack into the barrel. We will need the extra for the angels share. I'd imagine we will lose a bit to evaporation.
So far we have:
Keggermeister
JohnnyMac
X
Chalmers
Tim Gregory

as the first firm commitments. Do we have enough commitment for 2 barrels?

I was thinking along the lines of a RIS, but whatever everyone would like to do. Keep in mind that the wineries also sell barrels. Russian river uses red and white for their sour beer, if anyone wanted to consider that route...

I could be talked into this, but we need more then the three of us marsh-dwellers. I'm not sure I would know what to do with 20 gallons of barley wine each. Even 10 seems like a lot of wood aged beer. I would also be interested in a wine, or a port, barrel over a scotch barrel. The only beers I have had aged in scotch barrels end up tasting like watered down scotch. A good Canadian whiskey barrel might be nice too. 40 creek makes a damn fine spirit and if they are selling I could pick it up in December when I am in the area.
