LF 5 gallon pot (with markings)
Hi all,
After getting fed up with not having accurate volumes, I'd like a 5 gallot pot for strike and sparge water. Anyone have anything kicking around?
I currently have the 4ish gallon from Noble Grape with 1 gallon intervals, which has made my first few all grain batches a pain in the ass to understand how much is coming out of the mash/sparge. I'd like to be able to see half or quarter gallons.

Re: LF 5 gallon pot (with markings)
I originally made markings on my plastic spoon that normally comes with the starter kits. Add 5 liters at a time and mark them on the spoon as you go. You can mark the individual liters by dividing the space between 5 liter markings. Alternatively, you can just measure it out 1 liter at a time. There are other ways to go about making a measuring device, but that is likely the quickest/easiest/cheapest method.
Here's a bit fancier way that you can do it.

I was going to say that, but he said he's having trouble figuring out what's coming out of the mash/sparge.

Mine was accurate for the first couple of months, now it's out by a couple litres for every 15 to 18 measured.

Yea volumes aren't accurate I find. It's unfortunate. Maybe mine was defective. Was off by a few liters on a large batch. Derek said he has had issues too.

My pre boil OG was around 1030 but then OG when pitched was correct at 1058. Very weird for it to go up so much, though on a cold day like today there was lots of evaporation.

Re: LF 5 gallon pot (with markings)
That is quite the jump, you're right. That's almost a 50% boiloff (going from 40l to 20l), which is unlikely.bandarker wrote:My pre boil OG was around 1030 but then OG when pitched was correct at 1058. Was your final volume also correct?
How long was your boil?
Do you do single infusion, batch sparge?
Do you have any gravities for your first runnings vs. the sparge?

Was there temp corrections made on your pre boil OG?
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Re: LF 5 gallon pot (with markings)
Hehe I assume from your question there's supposed to be?
When I was cleaning out the mash tun I found only 32oz or so leftover, I stopped adding wort into my boil pot when I got worried about too much volume.

Re: LF 5 gallon pot (with markings)
Yeah higher temp wort will give you lower readings so they need to be corrected. Eg. 1.030 wort at 150f is actually 1.049 wort at 60f
