Sanitizer

Post by CorneliusAlphonse » Wed Sep 28, 2011 7:47 pm

What's everyone use for sanitizing and cleaning? Where do you get it?

I'm almost out of pink chlorine stuff and I'd probably like something else that rinses easier.. I use Iodophor with everything kegging.

I noticed Chalmers and Liverdance use oxyclean, I guess it's cheaper and comes in a big box. That's what I will be buying the next time I need some

I use ocyclean for cleaning and starsan for sanitizing, but I have some of the pink chlorine stuff too. It usually gets used for small equipment between brew sessions (testing jar, hydrometer, etc).

Instead of paying for pretty pink chlorine powder you could try unscented household bleach - basically the same thing :cheers2:

I use oxiclean for cleaning (with lots of rinsing) and Iodophor for sanitizing.

Edit: If you try OxiClean get OxiClean Free if you can find it. It has no dyes or fragrances.

Pink stuff for cleaning my carbuoy and brewbucket
Starsan for sanitizing equipment

PBW for cleaning and Starsan for sanitizing. Though, I'll likely switch to Oxiclean free when my 5lbs of PBW runs out.

thanks for the responses guys. Where can one find oxyclean or powdered brewery wash? I need to give two kegs a thorough soak and research tells me that they are likely the best. I know i've seen oxyclean but I can't remember if it was at walmart, or a grocery store, or where...

You can probably find Oxyclean just about anywhere, but I'm guessing that places like Walmart and Costco likely sell it in the largest and cheapest quantities.

I use OxyClean for label removal, bleach for carboys and bottles, PBW on everything else.

I'm happy with PBW's effectiveness but the cost is quite high. I'd consider making the switch to OxyClean but I hate those bloody crystals - can't find OxyClean Free in NL.

I have always used Iodophor for sanitizing and find it does a wonderful job. The only thing is I find I waste quite a lot of it and it'll stain your tubing eventually. I'm considering trying out StarSan - maybe I can keep a 5 gallon bucket and spray bottle active for awhile, to offset the initial cost.

With that said, I'm still only halfway through the last bottle of Iodophor I bought, so it's probably not worth it.
