First brew has just been bottled

Post by HidiBrew2u2 » Sat Nov 15, 2014 7:13 am

Hi all,

I hope to move to NS in 2015 and just happened to stumble upon your forum whilst researching the microbrewery scene in NS.
Looking forward to learning all the ins and outs of the Atlantic brew scene. The Netherlands, where I'm currently residing,
has a good few microbreweries, but it's a bit hard to come by good supplies of kits and raw materials (hence I started with
a brew kit - see below).

I've just brewed my very first batch of beer, a better brew ipa kit, a quart of which I just bottled as is, the remainder I dry hopped
with hops from my own garden - wish I knew which hops they were - they had a great fruity taste when the hops were very young
and the smell when they were bigger was a citrussy apricot smell. Hoping that will enhance my first brew and not ruin it.

:cheers2: Pam

Welcome. Our brewery scene is on fire right now and is only growing. The Pub Magazine has a great map which will highlight everything open presently in Atlantic Canada.
As for brewing, you found a great spot. If you have any questions, please let us know. :cheers2:

Hello, and welcome. What part of NS are you thinking of moving to? Craft brewing and home brewing here are flourishing, and you'll have no trouble with ingredients. Your hops sound amazing. Some descriptions of Citra mention apricot and it also prominent citrus flavours. Australian summer is said to have apricot but I don't know that hop, just looked it up and I might try some.

Cheers and good luck with the move. I came here from the UK and am more than happy ...so the beer must be ok here :)

Keep us updated with your move. We should throw a Brewnosers' welcome party when you arrive.

Thank you guys! We are looking at settling in the Valley, close to, but not in, Wolfville looking forward to a welcome party! (looking up import rules on goods to follow as we speak - should bring some Dutch microbrew beer tot taste along then, shouldn't I...)

@Mark Thanks for the pointer re:my hops, gives me a starting point. If my beer turns out ok, I'd like to be able to reproduce the recipe ;-)

WOLFVILLE!!!!!. That's where I live. :spilly:

It's an amazing town.

I have a sixth sense. I thought you were going to say Wolfville and I'd be in charge of the welcome party ...so there you go! you said Wolfville, and I'm in charge of the welcome party ...I don't know why people think life is complicated, when it really isn't :)

I think I'll send you an email so you can keep in touch with any information on the area you might need, ahead of the move.

I like to think life is not as complicated as we are led to believe. :spilly:
I mean beer, bbq, welcome parties, people to enjoy it with, simple!
And yes please: inside info on Wolfville et al is cool! That'd be great! Thx.

I'm actually planning a trip to Europe that includes some time in the Netherlands! I'd love some tips on where to find interesting and delicious beers when I'm there in April :cheers2:

Hi Darci/Jenn,

To give you some good tips tell (or pm) me some places you'll be near to and if you will be traveling by car or public transport. There are some
awesome little breweries (with restaurants) I could tell you about. I should take time to write these down anyway, with some personal notes....
For starters, if this is a holiday visit in April, you are most likely to visit the Keukenhof in Lisse: the bulb flower garden. If you'd be staying in
Haarlem, or even if you're staying in Amsterdam, you'd want to go visit the Jopen brewery, which has been set up in an old church. You can taste
the beer, see the brewery in action and grab a bite to eat. If I'm still here in April you could come try my beer :cheers2: although that might be
gone by then...

Are you by any chance going to visit Belgium, I've been to Poperingen en Brugge this summer and could offer some recommendations...

And it turns out the ones I dry hopped are much better in taste! Not perfect, bit bitter in the beginning but mellowing. Very fruity. Yummy and not bad for a first try. OH agreed.
BB IPA as it is, is a little to bitter.

Welcome aboard!

I had a lovely (though too quick) tour of Netherlands a few years ago, visiting friends who lived in Utrecht, also went to Brouwerij 't IJ and De Prael.

Can't wait to go back, though it probably won't be before you leave. :)

Thx! Glad you liked your stay in the Netherlands. I'm very familiar with the Brouwerij 't IJ and know about the De Prael, the brewery wasn't there yet when I moved out of the city. Might have to put it on our to do before we leave list... ;-)
