Although I still have a hydrometer not broken and used every batch since 1987, I now use a refractometer for everything except post fermentation readings.
As for software, I use Promash because it was a gift. If I had to buy software, I probably would have bought http://www.strangebrew.ca/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which is Canadian.
