site move

Ok, I've been busy testing out cloudatcost.com with the possibility of moving the site over there. IIRC we have until Sept 22 to move or pay another $350 (plus tax?) to Siteground.

I signed up for a Developer 2 host, only paid for one month at a mere $10 plus tax. I figured it was worth the risk to test it out. If we move we can buy it out for $70. If it doesn't perform well enough we can upgrade to Developer 3 for another $70. Still, it's way cheaper than Siteground and worth the risk. Having our own host is better in a lot of ways too, gives us a better idea what's going on with the site and the ability to make it run better, control over mail, and other stuff.

You can check it out at http://dev.brewnosers.org/forums" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There's some broken images but I'm tired of trying to figure out why / where they're hardcoded to "www.brewnosers.org" even though I have the board set to otherwise. So don't worry about that, the images are there.

Moving the site needs to be done in steps. Siteground hosts our actual domain registry as well so I'd like to transfer it to another registrar that I use. I have no idea what Siteground charges for that but their interface sucks ass. I'd use domainsatcost.ca (about $14 per year) and host the DNS at Amazon. If we decide to move I'd like to do this as soon as possible. That way I can lower the TTL (time to live) on the www record and we can leave Siteground without worry that they'll mess us up.

I have a script on the cloudatcost host that dumps a couple databases (wordpress one too), sync up the site files, and loads the new database on the other end. This means we can move the site pretty quick when we go to do it.

I also don't want to do this too hung over or right before Hoptoberfest. I should be ok by Sunday evening lol.

So, what do you all say?

It's really about money at this point I think. I already have too much time into this as well.

I think it sounds great, but I get a forbidden error on that site.

Way over my head. If you think it's the best move, I say do it.

It's working now. Note the wordpress stuff is all linking to "www".

I forgot I had a password over the whole site, when I took it off everything was forbidden because of a higher level security thing. Fixed now.

I'd say go for it if you have the time. It'll end up giving us the room we need to grow without paying through the nose for it.

Likewise, I say go for it!

At the end of the day, if you're willing to put the time in to reduce our costs, then go for it. Makes sense given the growth we've had over the past year.

While I may be heavily reliant on the internet, my understanding remains somewhat limited. If Rob thinks moving is best, I'm inclined to trust him.

As per the above comments. If you don't mind spending the time then cutting the coat while obtaining more control seems great. [THUMBS UP SIGN]

Hey guys, the domain name still hasn't transfered yet. Regardless I'm planning on switching the site over sometime in the next couple of hours using the DNS on the current provider. Because the Siteground account expires tomorrow and the domain might not be transfered tomorrow, there's the chance of an outage until that happens.

BTW, the ip address of the new site will be 162.244.25.26.

If you're reading this you're on the new site and it has been moved. We still may experience an outae tomorrow with the domain transfer to the new registrar.

I've noticed that too. However, I've also noticed some periods of poor performance while working on the system. Not often though.

Most emoticons weren't available on Tapatalk anyway (or at least my version)
