That instance size would be fine. I have to figure out our bandwidth though.
Also with google you can customize your VM size. For example, if you need 1 vCPU and 3GB of RAM. AWS only provides pre-defined sizes. Often GCP is much cheaper than AWS.

You get 20 guys (or girls) who pitch in 2.00 a month and you could get your hosting. (I know my math is a little off, but I am sure you could get people to pitch in 15-20/year)

Once I get the numbers together I'll table a plan.

Club brings in a fair bit via the group buys.
Should be plenty in the bank to pay for hosting without having to directly chase down $2.00 per member monthly. or $24 annually. :cheers2:

Ha, we'll need more than a t1. :)

The bandwidth might get out of hand there is the problem.
I'm a little surprised bandwidth is an issue considering the size of the community and the general contents of the site. I'm assuming it's mostly the pictures that are the issue?

Could we mitigate the amount of bandwidth used by doing one or more of the following?
  • Limiting photo upload size (Tapatalk actually makes this easy from mobile)
  • Requiring login to view pictures (lots of boards do this)
  • Disallowing direct access/hotlinks to image files
  • Preventing images from being crawled

One minor quibble - the new font "Poppins" used in a bunch of places (like in the header) is terrible. Specifically, lowercase-i's are rendered as uppercase which makes them indistinguishable from both lowercase L's and uppercase I's.

What about a free community like Reddit? I'm sure 8/10 Brewnosers are already Redditors.

I agree, I would think bandwidth is low as its mainly text, would have to post a lot of photos to make it an issue.

I previously offered hosting on my server for free, got no response.

We serve a lot of photos.

In my experience cpannel hosts aren't great and it's better to have a virtual os or dedicated system. Not that cloud at cost is living up to the "better" part.

I could also host it "for free" but going for a stable long term solution instead.

Not a lot of photos, in bandwidth terms, and most are viewed a very limited number of times. Would love to see the BW figures but I would be surprised if they are at all significant.

Your experience obviously doesn't match mine, In 8 years of running a web design/hosting company using both VPS and dedicated servers with a reputable host, I have had only one period of extended downtime while they switched me to a new server (free upgrade) took 4 hours and they did it exactly when I requested, out of hours. I use a monitoring company and I reckon I have had less than a dozen outages, never exceeding 1hr, and some of those will have been network related..

I don't think I could get much more stable or long term than that. AWS recently had a big outage didn't it.

IMO Cpanel/WHM is the dogs bollocks for making management of accounts as simple as possible including ease in backup recovery and MySQL admin with PHPadmin. All my clients accounts and DBs are backed up locally and to AWS S3 nightly. If I "Had" to change hosts I could have all my clients sites back up and running in hours using WHM/Cpanel account imports.
Cpanel also now provides FREE Comodo hostname SSL certs that are auto renewed every year. Nothing to do or pay!

I have also used Amazon. For a simple site like this I don't see any advantage in AWS. Both my systems are "managed" I get support within minutes and any problems caused by system software upgrades etc are fixed very quickly. I'm not going to get that with AWS.

I made the offer because I think Brewnosers is a great resource and it would be nice if it was available 100% of the times I attempt to access it , instead of probably 30% with CaC.

Whatever you choose it has got to be an improvement on what it is now.

The advantage of AWS or any other cloud provider is they have multiple availability zones for your VMs. Meaning if one AZ goes down you can bring it back up in another AZ automatically. Thus, more highly available than most other hosting providers. This process can be automated.

AWS had a degredation in S3 from an engineer who was executing a command. IIRC it was their first major degredation in 7 years. You can get support from Amazon but it costs big bucks, the likelyhood of of us needing it is slim. AWS has major fortune 500 companies so their ass is on the line when shit goes wrong.

For patching and upgrades you can use docker to have this automated so you don't need to manage a machine.

Certainly lots of options. Preferably we just go with something reliable, secure and supports low cost SSL/TLS.

No questions asked, we should be pulling in enough money from the group buys to pay for hosting for the year...that was the whole point of the Brewnosers 5% on the group buys.

Thanks Rob for moving it - seems to be working great!

The phpbb designers have just introduced another upgrade for the forum. It seems to be a pretty major one which is causing a lot of problems. I shall keep an eye on things for the moment but will have to do it soon. The forum will be offline whilst its being carried out so Ill try and give some warning.

Im not sure yet if we will actually notice any obvious differences - its mostly security stuff.

Hopefully it will go smoothly...
