5 gallons of mead with 6kg honey?

Post by GCR » Fri Sep 21, 2018 9:24 pm

So I've had some great cider results and i figured I'd give mead a go.

Picked up 6 Kg honey at Costco and some champagne yeast (llalaemand) and Mangrove Jack's mead yeast. I have yeast nutrient too.

I figure I'll make something basic to start out with. Any advice? Is that enough honey for 5 gals? Seen a few recipes online and it seems feasible. Is yeast nutrient enough do y'all reckon? Anyone had good results with costco honey?

I've used the Costco honey in a braggot but not a straight mead. Turned out nice. I like the Mangrove Jacks yeast, interesting esters. 3 pounds of honey per gallon of must will get you about 15% alcohol, you're at about 2.6 with 6 kg of honey so that looks good to me.

With the nutrient additions, there are lots sites that detail the staggered nutrient additions. This approach speeds up the process considerably.
Red Five Brewery
Anchorhead Steam
Boba Fest
Carbonate ChAmber Ale
Chewbocka
Darklighter Stout
Episode V - ESB
Hoth 45
Ryewalker IPA

Great, thanks! I had great results with the Mangrove Jacks cider yeast, so I figured I would give the mead one a chance too.

I second the staggered nutrient additions, I did a 3 gallon batch with citra hops. It turned out amazing and was very drinkable within a couple months.

It’s a bit much to keep track of but worth it.

I've had good results with Mangrove Jack's mead yeast, better than 1118 at least
On tap: Hopped Mead, ESB, Schwazbier
Coming up: Altbier
Fermenting: Maibock
Planned: NEIPA, NZ Pils, Oyster Stout
