Hi, I was just curious, what do people do with their spent grain? I'm sure people who brew smaller quantities likely just throw them in the green bin, but if anyone who brews in larger quantities would care to comment...

I have my own composter - I compost most of my spent grain, and bake with the remainder.

I compost mine so I spread it on the garden in the spring!

I compost mine as well. I have a healthy colony of red wrigglers in my compost and they go nuts for spent grain!

I also add it to my compost bin. Works well for my garden.

I unfortunately set it to the curb after each brew.

I'll take it off your hands for you and feed it to my chickens. I don't live far away and will happily pick it up.

I'll probably wind up throwing most of them in a generic compost bin for my apartment building... After giving the small vermicomposter we have started as much as they can handle (probably only a few pounds for a young one) and saving half a pound or so for bread purposes (maybe more... Can I freeze spent grain for later baking?)

Yes, you can freeze wet spent grain for later - I pack it in 1C size portions for use later.

You can also dry it on cookie sheets in the oven and use it dry as is, or grind it fine. Both do well in breads.

If you have a dog, it also makes great dog treats when mixed wet with peanut butter, whole wheat flour and eggs, then baked until hard and dry.

Is it wrong that spent grain bread is a major "pro" in my books for switching from extract to all-grain beer?

Made bread this weekend for the first time using spent grain.... Turned out great! Just used robin hoods roll and bread mix and added 2 cups of the good stuff
