just wondering if anyone has got one of the letters about copy right infringement for illegally downloading material yet? i noticed the cbc had something a few weeks ago and today the q has something as well.

Haven't gotten one yet...
Co-worker did though, but he downloads a crap tone of stuff. I have drastically cut back.

I got one. I'm with Eastlink and it popped up in the middle of a web page one day.

a friend of mine got the pop up. googled and it he said it turned up as a scam, I can see someone trying to make some money on this like they did with the RCMP porn pop up a few years ago.

My wife had it pop up on her screen as well not long ago. A bit of info on it here:

Yeah I've seen em. Just ignore it, there are still no examples of Canadians being sued for downloading material

I looked into it a bit since my roomie downloads a lot and the bill is in my name... Seems the consensus is that unless you're hosting a ton of stuff, it's really not worth their while to go after you. Very difficult to prove you actually downloaded the file. If you're really concerned, you could always go through a proxy, but honestly, I don't think it's something to really worry about, IMHO

I agree with that hosting bit, Jayme. Just don't leave a shit ton of completed torrents sitting there uploading all the time.

Even if you got taken to court (will never happen) there is a 5000$ cap on damages from non-commercial copyright infringement - that's why you will never get taken to court, they'd spend ten times more than that on lawyers

I think they look at really new stuff harder as well.

That's a pretty dangerous assumption to make I fully expect that someone with deep pockets (ie: HBO) will take at least some folks to court eventually. They'll ensure that the media makes a big deal about it, and the scare factor will more than make up for the lost lawyer fees.

Just to note, 5000$ is the maximum possible damages for ALL infringement (not per offense), no one has been sued for it yet, and it is unlikely that maximum damages would be awarded. Pretty low risk imo.

A person I know has seen the letters, both were for HBO shows.

That person was already paying for and using unblock-us to watch US content. That is a proxy service, and will not protect you from these letters, or other snooping.

That person is now using privateinternetaccess.com, a VPN service. It's safe and secure. And cheaper than unblock-us.
That person has definitely noticed a speed drop, but that person thinks it's worth it for the features above. That person is very happy with this service.
That person would suggest if people use PIA, try using OpenVPN as the client, because the PIA software gets very bloaty.

That person now feels more secure when watching their Friendship is Magic streaming videos.

These copyright enforcement companies always had your IP (easy to get from torrents), now the law provides a way for them to contact you without knowing your identity (through your ISP). They still need a court order to get your personal information before they can even attempt to sue you, and as per before that has proven no easy task in Canadian courts. I guess it remains to be seen how that will play out going forward, but the law actually does some good things as people in the US have spent time in court trying to argue if the 2 movies they shared were worthy of 50-100k+ in damages.

The goal here is these letters would scare people enough to stop while putting most of the hassle/cost associated with it on the ISP and it seems like its working.

All things to consider but I use a VPN and think about beer, a lot. Never about being sued for a fucking movie download. Ever. This lengthy paragraph is as deep as it gets because I use a VPN. My attitude evolved from "Don't worry, have a homebrew" so fuck letters, have a beer instead. And think about it.

If your willing to pay for a service, I would move away from torrents all together. There's other better options where you don't share anything, so it puts you in a slightly better position in terms of legality.

Interesting - I have a friend using PIA and he notices a speed increase when downloading torrents, now that his ISP isn't throttling his downloads! Likely varies by ISP...

This. I rarely touch a torrent. There's a significant speed increase with other options as well.
