I've got 3 Apple TVs in the house. We're an all apple household so they work great for us.

Were all apple too, thinking of ditching cable once we move and this just seems the easiest way. My folks have a chromecast and I was tinkering yesterday and it was fairly simple but my assumption was apple with Apple is just easier.

If you already have apple products, I would suggest you go with the apple tv. One nice feature is the 'screen mirroring' where you can wirelessly stream whatever is on your phone / laptop / idevice directly to the tv. This is native to all of the modern apple operating systems, I find it is really handy and works great. If you do get one you might want to consider wiring it to your network rather than relying on the wifi, I found this helped with performance. Just my 2 cents

My parents have apple tv and I found the menu system extremely sluggish and annoying, especially when browsing netflix. I built a cheap pc to use as a media center instead for $80 or so.

I have both Apple TV & Chromecast

For simplicity with the missus and parents, Apple TV made things easy. The shared photo stream if you happen to have iPhones, made sharing pics of the newborn with the grandparents this past year invaluable. Netflix, video podcast and audio streams like NPR well worth the cost IMO. If you've invested in the iOS try Apple TV first. I pay the extra few $$ to get the US Netflix and it's all good....ALL GOOD.

Chromecast works the best IMO with a phone (android or iPhone) using an app like Youtube or Netflix or casting a browser tab (using Chrome web browser) of a movie. "Finding" mp4 files for playback seems to work the best in my situation. Netflix works very well, and been using rdio lately....all from the phone.
