Agreed,

Yet there were fast food restaurants in our hospitals until last year... And we are bombarded with commercials every day that approve the idea that Tim hortons breakfast sandwich or the mcveggie wrap are healthy...

Ben. The facts and results of research should win the argument if presented well and if they support your case well.

There are different populations to consider. Is there any way that you can differentiate these populations. Obviously children need protection, but I’m also worried about our risk taking, thrill seeking youth. I’m not so concerned about one of us mature and experienced cyclists, cycling to the corner store to get a bottle of milk. Can you put in there some way of protecting our youth?

Have you had a lot of dealings with DoctorsNS that you can make such a statement X. I’m not saying you are right or wrong. In my experience everything in that world is heavily “evidence based” so any argument will need to be based on the latest information and studies rather than emotional reaction. Emotional reaction and public opinion is the stuff of small town committees and politics, and those are the people that make me crazy. It sounds like Ben knows the way to approach this and is confident he can speak the correct language…that of evidence based argument.

Why are they even presenting a position? They should provide data and let democracy rule. Nothing more.

I don't think Doctors NS are making any decisions. They are presenting information to elected politicians, just as Ben will be doing. I don't think they have power because they are doctors. That might be your perception and you didn't answer my question about what you are basing that on (whether it's supposition or personal experience of Doctors NS) I think they have a concern and access to information.

They are quite clearly taking positions, as opposed to presenting data. Listen to the interviews and articles. They are a lobbying organization, and not to be trusted.

Regarding Doctors and evidence based medicine. Did you know that guidelines are now advising doctors in the US and Canada not to check PSA and do digital prostate exams as screening in the absence of symptoms or risk factors? There is no evidence to support that doing that improves outcomes, and it leads to multiple biopsies and other medical interventions. I’m not sure you and I would agree with that. Same with yearly pap smears. They only need to be done every five years except in a high risk patient or symptomatic patient. They have always been done every 5 years in the UK, but it looks like Canada is going to opt with every three years just in case something was missed on the first one. Self-examination of the breasts has always been recommended, now that’s going out the window, as there is no evidence it improves outcomes…again I don’t agree, but the evidence says otherwise. Things are in a constant state of flux, and it’s all based on evidence in medicine, so biking recommendations could easily change if there is new evidence and new arguments to support health and environment. The US is legislating to ban trans fats (hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated fats) totally. It has been estimated that hydrogenated fats are responsible for 30% of heart disease in North America. Next time you eat in McDonalds ask them what kind of fat they use. They advertise how many billion big macs they have sold, but they keep quiet about how many heart attacks they are responsible for, and it is probably a massive number. it's doctors organisations that encourage changes such as the trans fat legislation in the us, in the interests of public health. Commercial industry sadly has a lot more power and financial backing.

What's wrong with taking a position if it is based on evidence. Ben is taking a position, based on evidence, and so he should. New evidence is coming out all the time, and everything is in a state of flux. As long as people don't hold rigid positions that are not based on evidence, I think it is all good.

...lobbying and legislation is a top strategic priority for Doctors Nova Scotia.
From their own website.

I don't want doctors becoming lobbyists, all I want is data. It's a moot point anyway, as this will be impossible to defeat until this province adopts US style democratic voting on individual issues.

Bike auction tomorrow if anyone needs a bike. Cash only, about 15-20 good ones that just need a bit of work, and another 80 that need serious work or are unfixable. Just in case anyone is interested! Devonshire arena, viewing at 8, auction starts 9 or 10 I think

Totally. I think that's how most people feel - helmets are usually good, helmet laws are shit and don't address the real issue (unsafe road construction practices)

I usually don't wear a helmet when riding in the road bike in the mountains. I do wear a helmet when cycling in the city. My commute to work is around 20km each way to westjet.

Funny thing is I bike all year around in Calgary. Coldest this far was around -25 deg. The climate here is fantastic for biking all year around and very little snow.

Did some cycling in kananaskis last weekend. 70km headwind gusts were tough. Ride back was decent though.
