The New Samsung Chromebook

Post by GuingesRock » Sun Jul 21, 2013 7:55 pm

$269 @ FutureShop

I just got one of these for my wife’s birthday present. She loves it! It’solid state. Has its own open source operating system called Google Chrome OS which is Linnux based (I think). It’s a Samsung. The operating system is fast as hell. Doesn’t need security! No bloody Norton! No bloody Windows! and its only $269. A similar solid state Samsung computer with windows that I was looking at a few months ago was over $1000. You can’t put MS office and stuff on it, but it has Google documents loaded. Good for online work, Google, Netflix, Facebook, Twitter etc. 100gb free cloud storage for 2 years on Google Drive. HDMI socket so you can hook it up to TV, 2 USB drives (including one of the new type) and headphone socket. No CD drive.

Thought I’d pass it on in case it would suit anyone.

Double check what I said about it…think I got everything right though.

I looked at one of those a while back. Was thinking about picking one up to use as a media center.

Can it take any storage? Like a bigger ssd.

Sent from Tapatalk 2, a prick of a company.

It can't take additional SSD, but it is able to accept USB 2.0 and 3.0 drives. Most of the storage I use is cloud based (read: Google Drive and Dropbox). The only downer is no beersmith, but I use my phone pretty much exclusively for BS now anyway.

I Googled that and found the below. Don't know if it helps...or if it is true.
If you're looking at getting a Chromebook, know that you can only do things that work in a web browser. If you really want to use Beersmith, you'd still need a traditional computer to run it and you could use Chrome Remote Desktop to access it.

So this is basically a tablet with a keyboard?

I headed into FutureShop, and I was thinking of getting an i-pad for my wife, but this thing was half the price, it had a bigger screen, a keyboard, and from what I could make out it was a lot more functional. She has an Samsung andriod smart phone, so they should talk to each other well.

The best I could describe is that it's a hybrid between a windows style operating system and a droid. I wouldn't say it's one or another, but it works exceptionally well for what I use. On the "you can't do anything not web based" idea, there are apps similar to android that you can download to the SSD and use offline. It's definitely not for everyone, but I'm liking it, especially at that $269.00 price point.

Very cheap, but I don't think that one is solid state.

Definitely not solid state. Plus I personally don't trust Acer anymore since my last 2 products from them overheated and melted motherboards, not to mention nearly burning down my apartment at the time

There's no tubes in it though, lol. I assume you guys are referring to the hard drive?

Rest of that story is funny.

Right. I've owned a few Acers, and the failure rate is notably higher on all components than my other laptops.

The SSD in the cheap chromebook could certainly be replaced with something bigger, but there's probably not much point unless you're planning to install a real Linux desktop.

I'd like to see a sxs review. SSDs are sweet, but cloud is a killer for me. Then again, the HHD isn't much good if it's melted.
