VANCOUVER, BC – The Ubyssey, the student newspaper of the University of British Columbia (UBC), has reported that the school’s student society and government, the UBC Alma Mater Society (AMS) has approved the inclusion of an on-site microbrewery in the new Student Union Building that is currently under construction.
First proposed last March, the yet-to-be-named brewery will take up approximately 1,000 square feet of space in the basement of the SUB, and will produce beer primary for sale at The Pit and The Perch, the two pubs planned for the building, although sales at other licensed establishments elsewhere on campus are also possible.
According to AMS President Jeremy McElroy (pictured above), a feasibility report commissioned with First Key Consulting “came back positive, saying that due to the craft beer culture in Vancouver as well as the nature of being isolated on campus and the amount of beer we go through right now, that it would be feasible to brew our own and in fact do really well while doing it.”
While many details of the project have yet to be finalized, McElroy says that he expects the price point of the UBC-brewed beer to be lower than other brands, making it likely to be warmly welcomed by the student body.

Do you think Dal would go for it? I mean it's a no brain-er for all, except maybe administration. I bet they would form a VP of hop utilization and he would be raining down on you ass all day for using too much hops. Then they would turn around and say you can't make a profit at it because they need a six figure VP checking over your brewing habits. *sigh, maybe I'm a little bitter today.

The student union is currently exploring self-op food. I had proposed this idea when I was council but I was mostly mocked. We have a contract where Molson subsidizes everything so it's hard to change that. They are looking to expand the SUB in a few years, so I'll keep pushing so long as I'm a student.

Yeah right, they won't even give up the lab space they promised us. I think town hall would make a better brewery anyways, and have less regulations then trying to deal with the Admin over here.
