Netflix US Anyone?

I know a couple of you guys use Netflix. Well after a bit of reading online I found out it's actually pretty easy to use the American Netflix service in Canada.

All you need to do is sign up for a vpn service online, then log into your regular Netflix account at netflix.com and all the American content is available for viewing. I tried it last night and it definitely works. I used http://www.hotspotshield.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to test it out (it's a free vpn service, but has ads) and then signed up for an ad free vpn service (http://www.boxpn.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). It's $3.75/month for the vpn service and 7.99 for netflix, so it's a pretty cheap alternative to a cable service.

Just thought I would give everyone a heads up, it's definitely worth the 3.75 for anyone already subscribed to netflix!

The Blockbuster in Amherst closed over the summer and now there's no place to rent backlist movies. I'll definitely have to look into this.

Yeah, there was a good thread on RFD about that. As I'm sure there is in many places now. Have fun policing the internet CRTC. :finger: :finger:

Apparently http://www.unblock-us.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is supposed to work well and it works on game consoles as well. I use my xbox 360 to watch netflix most of the time, so this might be a better solution for me.

I did, I used the unblock.us for my wii and it works great. I had to remove and reinstall the app on the wii as you've got to get it from the "US wii store". The other thing is i didn't have to sign up for the unblock.us, they had the DNS addy's right on their website

there is another option called unblockus.com it works in much the same way but allows not only hulu, netflicks, but also uk tv and latin american. I think it's 5$ a month or something like that.

Any idea why ATV 2's are sold out. I have been trying to find one in HRM and St John's but they are sold out everywhere. I guess ordering from apple is the only option.

I agree with Jamie. Apple is holding an event on March 7th where it's rumoured that the iPad 3 will launch. I'm guessing that the Apple TV will get an update then as well. I've been holding off updating my second Apple TV (a first gen one) until then.

Logitech dropped the Revue. Sony seems to have temporarily suspended production of any of their products (at least I can't find any for sale). A number of other vendors promised there would be Google TV announcements at CES - but if they happened, they weren't big enough to get a mention in my feeds. I'd guess Apple TV is all there is available in this market right now, and Apple _likes_ scarcity.

I'm curious how much money Logitech lost with the revue. Having to drop the price of each unit from ~$300 down to $99 must have been a pretty huge hit per unit.

Apple likes scarcity, but that's usually closer to the start of a product's life. Quite often if a product is low in numbers after it's been out for a few years it means that they're running down supplies before an updated version is released.

ya I am hearing that apple tv 3 is coming in march
only place around to get them is at apple

I'm hoping there arent too many major updates to the atv 3 to make it not as hacker friendly

they havent for instance in the past pulled the ipad 1's before the 2's came out

I had no idea that these things were so popular. I have a Mac Mini attached to my T.V. as a media centre.

I think the $119 ($99 in the US) price tag that really got these units flying off the shelf. Really can't beat that price. I would have preferred going with a Mac Mini as well but couldn't justify the extra few hundred dollars, especially since all of my media is in a format that will play on the Apple TV and stream from iTunes (I convert all of my video to M4V).

Last fall a new crack hit the interwebz for the ATV2, now with Seas0nPass untethered jailbreak it's a piece of cake to make the little box very useful compared to what it had ever previously been. Sales went through the roof. There was a guy on Hfx kijiji a month or so ago selling jailbroken and flash black'd atv2s for $250    Not sure if he's still got them up there or not. The jailbreak allows you to run XBMC and a bunch of other stuff. It seemed like the way to go so I bought a new one in January, got it, jailbroke it, atv flash black, xbmc, browser, apps, yadda yadda. I had my cable disconnected with a plan to use the atv2 but I never really watched cable anyways since I download everything I watch. Also, I wouldn't pay for hi-def TV but since I disconnected I get 6 or 8 channels in hi-def, just run a line from a cable splitter off the weaklink internet cable and bingo. Their filters can't scramble all the tv signals and my LCD is new and has an amazing digital tuner that helps pull in some of the digital channels

I played with the atv2 for a couple hrs after I had it all hacked and running and never turned it on since  I still download everything and stream it to the big screen via HDMI on a dual monitor setup.

Sooooo.... who wants to buy a new freshly cracked ATV2? :cheers2:
