I've got an automated system running that automatically watches for new TV episodes, downloads from Usenet, converts to M4V with HandBrakeCLI, tags with metadata, and imports to iTunes on my iMac so I've never felt the need to jailbreak.

I used to run xbmc on my mac mini
i found most of the streams were not great

my reasoning for the atv2 is to hack it
ill already have it set for us netflix so that bit is taken care of
i also download a lot of tv so also want the hack to play that on the atv2 as well

nash ive got 100 bucks to spend on the atv 2 if you want it
i know there are people out there asking a lot of money for ones already hacked
i get that but i could do that myself so really dont see paying for it

if you want that cash for the work you did
totally understand
just puts it out of my price range

ATV needs an ethernet connection doesn't it? If it has WiFi, I'm interested, but ethernet's out.

Looks like it doesn't. I'll be happy to take it off your hands.

And the Wifi (N) works great. I stream 720p video from my iMac upstairs to my AppleTV downstairs with no issues whatsoever.

I guess I was a little ambiguous there - I meant "looks like it doesn't need ethernet".

Canadian one works. As long as your setup with unblockus, or boxpn etc. it will redirect you to the US netflix.

(I love the smell of resurrected threads in the PM .....)

What's the current situation with VPNs or DNS addresses and Hulu if I want to stream from the laptop? Or rather, what's free and reliable?

I've never used Hulu, but I spent some time messing around with a few different VPNs to get US netflix. Then I realized that projectfreetv.com has more complete content than netflix US anyway. I'm sure it's illegal, but then so is accessing US content through a VPN.

Cool. I'll have to check it out. For all the TV I watch, I could simply download the 3 or 4 shows I watch. But my wife is more of a network-show-channel-flipper kind of gal which is why I;m looking towards Hulu/Netflix for her.

How do you have this setup? Do you just send the video from your PC to your TV? Or, do you have a smart tv that can access the site directly?

I just use my TV as a computer monitor - my computer is an HTPC rig that lives in my stereo cabinet and looks like audio equipment, and I use a wireless mouse for a remote control. I still use Netflix as well for the shows it does have, as the interface is nicer than projectfreetv.

Not to revive an old conversation but you can access US Netflix in Canada without paying. I altered the DNS settings on my PS3 almost a year ago and get the US catalogue for free (well, the 8 bucks a month I pay not included). Sorry if this came up before.

"Fill with mingled cream and amber,
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chamber of my brain -
Quaintest thoughts - queerist fancies
Come to life and fade away;
What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today." ~ Poe

I use unblock-us.com and created an account with hulu as well as netflix. Netflix is the American version, and hulu is only available in America.

I'm doing the same as Jimmy. Canadian Netflix offers some things that you cannot get in the US, so the convenient proxy program that you can use to easily switch the proxy on/off with unblock-us was a great feature.

Call me cheap, I just didn't want to pay the extra $5 / month. :)
The free VPN's were all pretty sluggish.

right now, I have cable (eastlink), netflix and just started running XBMC on my Macbook, airplayed to the TV through my apple TV 3 (which is a useless piece of junk IMO). My kids have their own TVs in their rooms which are collecting dust and stopped watching Netflix once I rigged up the XBMC. I see everything being cancelled and just running XBMC on some media boxes in the near future as we can watch any show/channel that exists and use a remote which is important for my channel surfing wife! I love that I can finally watch Al Jazeera on a full sized TV!
