Wanted: Burner

Post by everedge » Tue Oct 14, 2014 6:22 pm

Hi All, I have a 15 gal pot and was using a burner made for a 5 gal outdoor deep fryer. (Recipe was for a 10 gal Smoked Porter)
Turns out it had the power to get to striking temp, but couldn't cut it when we went to boil. (Maxed at about 79c)
Now I'm in a bind to get my hands on a burner that will meet the heat requirement soon. Any suggestions on where I might find one in the Eastern Passage / Dartmouth area if possible?
If not, any thoughts on dividing the batch into 1/2 and doing it twice ... 2 days after striking?

A number of people say the Kent burner is a good one.

I've heard from a friend that Princess Auto might have good burners too, So I'll check Kent's as well, Thanks!

I use this one from Canadian Tire with my keggle. No issues so far although it does seem to use half a tank per batch, which I guess is a lot. Shrug!

I modified my outdoor burner by grinding out a notch in the stand so I could move the burner closer to the pot. Help with heat time and saved on propane.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I'll have to do that. It makes you wonder why they didn't design it closer to begin with...

I've done the Texas Two Step and found a two pot boil to be a PITA but it does work and saves buying equipment.
