Hi,

I've recently set up a 15 US Gal Plastic Conical and would like to start kegging. I'm looking to "piece-meal" a system together so if anyone has any spare parts for sale, I'd be interested. Looking for CO2 regulator, CO2 tank, corny kegs, etc.

honestly, save up and buy a complete 1 or 2 keg system for starters, then add onto it... ontariobeerkegs.com seem to have reasonable prices and they love us here.

how do you like your conical? mind me asking what you paid for it?

The conical is amazing for saving time. No racking or washing a lot of equipment. Just dump the trub from the bottom valve and voila you're in secondary. I get 105 or so 500 ml bottles from a batch. I'd include a picture but cant seem to do that. It cost $117 plus shipping (~$60) from Valox Ltd. in Fredericton.

Thanks for your opinion, I will consider that. I'm just using a lot of bottles and will get to kegs eventually.

I'm guessing Vorlox Ltd got a spike in their web page hits this afternon. And I couldn't even find the tank on their website! Ha!

As for kegs, I'm a bottler, but Ontario Beer kegs seems to be the place to get good prices. I'll buy your bottles when you switch to kegs though!

Valox took the tanks out of their catalogue but they still sell them. The tank in the picture is cat. # 60214.
PH # 1 800 825 6997 and no I don't work for them, I used to buy a lot of equipment from them for my work and knew what they had available. Lots of other companies out there selling them too though, especially in Ont. I think that's where mine was manufactured.

Google search Plastic Conical Fermenters if you are interested. There are tanks out there that are called 100% drain. The one I have has a slight flat bottom. Its a bit of a trade off because the screw top on mine can be made air tight with a simple o-ring. Some of the other tanks have plastic threads rivetted to the top that the top piece screws into. I've read a few horror stories about people trying to make them air tight. The tank I have will do 2 1/2 batches but you can get 30 gallon, 45, or any size tank really .
When I drain the tank there is still a bit of trub left in the bottom. The tanks that are "100%" draining seem to have smaller fittings and the trub actually clogs the drain sometimes. I don't think a bit of trub left in the bottom is a big issue though, some folks leave the beer on all the trub for up to 3 weeks with no racking. Others may argue this. I think the tank is worth the expense since you can do 2 1/2 batches AND it removes all that cleaning and sanitizing between rackings. I was running three sets of carboys, that's a lot of washing.

I wish I'd known about that 100% drain when I got mine. Not at all happy with the flat edge - it's difficult to get all the sludge out. And I really don't care if my top is totally air-tight - it shouldn't be necessary in a primary fermenter.
