SS Conical Fermenter

Post by canuck » Thu Apr 19, 2012 9:04 am

Anyone interested in purchasing a 7.3 gallon stainless steel conical fermenter with tri clamps? The company that I purchased my conical from has one that they will sell for $269.35 shipped to your door from PA. That's a pretty smokin' good deal. Let me know if you are interested in it.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

The conical is sold to LiverDance. I'll be talking with company today and I'll ask about a possible group buy.

I just spoke with the company and they are will do do group buys. They have two sizes of stainless steel conicals, 7.3 gallon and 12.5 gallon. Group buy price is $250 + shipping ($69) for the 7.3 gallon and $350 + shipping for the 12.5 gallon.

I may be interested, but would have to get some more details on them. Have a brand name, website, spec sheet, or anything like that?

Here is what I can tell you. Dave Lucas is the owner of the company and he sells his conicals on eBay under the name homebrewhousediscount. He's got 1805 feedback with a 100% positive rating. I've spoken with him a number of times on the phone and he's been nothing short of fantastic to deal with.

The dimensions of his conicals are:

7.3 is 35.5 Tall X 16 Wide ( but diagonally )
12.5 is 35.5 Tall X 21 Wide ( but diagonally )

I've attached a pic of his 7.3 gallon conical and his contact details are below in case anyone wants to ask further questions.

I wonder if anyone knows a metal fabricator in Atlantic Canada that might be interested in knocking off a bunch of these for a slightly lower price.

In fact, I know a metal fabricator... I shall see what I can find out

Also, I did a search on ebay and couldn't find that seller, but I did find a stoutsandkettles whose conicals are identical to those ones
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

The thing with conicals is they're not that cheap to fabricate based on the cost of stainless sheet metal alone. My brother in law is a sheet metal worker and we've talked about it a number of times and even planned the build out. After pricing out materials (including ferrules, valves, clamps, etc.) and time to build (all welds require the vessel to be purged with argon to prevent sugaring—a huge sanitation issue), you really aren't saving yourself any money by building one yourself or having someone build it for you. The only way it would be cheaper would be if you had access to an industrial stamper to limit the amount of welding and cutting.

At the prices this guy is asking, it's pretty near a steal of a deal as long as it's a quality build.

That looks exactly like my Stout conical and I paid $400 for mine plus duty $40 delivered to my door a few years ago.

That's a great deal if like Jeff says, that it's made of quality steel with sanitary welds.

Is that an individual shipping cost, or could that come down with quantity?

That is for individual shipping. I can only assume that it would be a little cheaper if he was shipping a number of them together. I can verify that though.

I would like to think he could ship like NCM. At any rate, I don't think 12.3 gal is big enough for me, or the price looks great. I need 14 gal minimum.
