Ball Lock Sources
What the news lately on the best source for ball locks? OBK has gone up in price. NG still have em for $59? Anywhere else? It pains me to pay that much for used kegs, but I've been looking for awhile for a better deal and I really need more at this point.

Re: Ball Lock Sources
You can try the little shop in the hydrostone. It's been years since I've been in there, but at the time the prices were better than NG. They could be long sold out too though....

Re: Ball Lock Sources
no idea on sources, other than keeping an eye on kijiji and having a fast response time. the shop in the hydrostone is no longer in the hydrostone - it is up on lady hammond now - but i have no idea if they have kegs/how much they go for.

Maritime Wine Emporium has/had 2 ball lock kegs, co2 and misc. pieces.
I can't remember the prices but call and ask.

Re: Ball Lock Sources
Hello,
Just found this website while searching the web for a good way to start kegging. I'm wondering the same thing, where to get good kegs! Anyone know a fair price? I see someone in Moncton on kijiji trying to sell some but i replied via e-mail and have gotten no response. They were asking $50 a piece.
Do you think the local brew shops sell used kegs?

Re: Ball Lock Sources
Supply has tightened up a lot, but there are definitely used kegs at the local shops. Prices aren't exactly awesome though.....

Re: Ball Lock Sources
Ok thanks. I can get some for 50 each. Or would it be better to get a full keg kit from something like Ontario beer keg price wise? I would imagine buying all separate would be cheaper but not sure.

I can help you out, and my kegs are pressure tested with new seals
Thanks!

Re: Ball Lock Sources
It seems you only have pin lock. I was pricing out ball lock which seem to be the more sought out. Do you have any? Anyone at to chime in with the differences pro cons? Thanks

Re: Ball Lock Sources
Only pro for either I can think of right now is that it's more difficult to cock up the gas and beer lines on the pin lock (2 vs 3 pins), whereas you can get a gas line full of beer from a ball lock keg due to inattention. Different dimensions of the kegs, so be aware for fridge/freezer choice.

IIRC, pin locks are shorter and fatter than ball locks??

Re: Ball Lock Sources
Okay thanks for the information, really don't know to much about it. I don't have the fridge yet. Used to have one but gave it away to the in laws. I would be looking to fit 2 kegs in a mini fridge. Is that possible with pin locks? Also what do you mean by "accessible prv's". Does that stand for pressure release valve? I'm assuming that would make my life a lot easier

Re: Ball Lock Sources
The guy I bought most of my stuff when I built my Kegerator messaged me, he is selling his full setup and moving back to bottles. He said he's looking for $550 for the setup. May be an easy way to get into kegging. I seen it (actually had a couple samples) when I picked up my stuff. It's in good shape.rybreww wrote:Okay thanks for the information, really don't know to much about it. I don't have the fridge yet. Used to have one but gave it away to the in laws. PM me your email if you are interested and I'll pass it along to him.
Freezer
20lb co2 & regulator
4 ball lock Kegs
Dual tower tap
All lines and fittings.
I think he is also including some carboys and buckets if wanted.
Below is a link to my Kegerator I just completed not too long ago. Includes the prices and gives you a few pics along the way.

Hope this helps. One thing to remember with the mini fridges, not all will hold a keg. They are compact, I had one at home and I couldn't even stand a ball lock inside.

Re: Ball Lock Sources
Thanks for the replies.
Keith - that seems a bit more of an investment then what i'm looking for. I would be more looking for 2 kegs with a cheap fridge option. Thinking more of the 250 max price range. Definitly sounds like a nice setup he has. Your Fridge looks nice! I will probably do the ball lock locally, it's hard to be tax in pricing of $50. I would order from the store in halifax from the forum member but i have to add tax and shipping so bit to expensive.
Thanks for the input. Mainly i need to figure out all the other items now to make the keg work. i'm going to try to price that all out seperately to get it the cheapest possible. Not sure if this is a thread to talk about that.

if I need to release pressure from my pinlock keg, I just press down on the air inlet with a sanitized screwdriver (the beer side spits at you)rybreww wrote:Okay thanks for the information, really don't know to much about it. Re: Ball Lock Sources
Bluenose has the right idea. The tops/covers/whatever people are calling them (the place that fills in the big hole up top) are 99% universal (you sometimes see a "racetrack" opening, but most are oval), so you can use a good PRV (yup, pressure release valve) cover on pins too. Some that Dave is selling have them.
The $550 price is a bit high, but not bad if the seller could be talked down to $400 or $450. For $250, I think you could get all of the hardware you want, minus a fridge. Or with a fridge, but minus taps. Both of these guesses are based on "used on kijiji". My initial foray into kegging was the noble Grape setup for $250 with 5lb tank, single reg and single ball lock and thumb tap, but it was the Xmas special and threw in an extra keg.

550 isn't the worst price I've seen but it can be better. Really just need to shop around and wait for a deal. It ran me about 440 for my setup. But sold some bottles to keep it in budget.
