WANTED: CO2 Tank

Post by dase74 » Tue Jul 15, 2014 4:43 pm

I have 2 x 30L kegs, and want to start brewing (have only done bottled beer in the past). I need a Senke type valve, CO2 tank (5 or 10 lb) and my regulator is old, could use a new one but not needed. I have a 5lb tank that is expired.

Any help/advice is appreciated!

I'd get your own tank hydro tested before buying new. Not a lot of sanke people here, but I'm sure someone can help out :spilly:

I am drinking ale today." ~ Poe

Simplex Grinnell sells reconditioned \ certified tanks. I think it was $85.00 for a reconditioned 5lb tank filled.
Dave @ Everwood can get you a new regulator or new tank if you so desire and I believe the Sanke fitting. :cheers2:

Should only cost ~$25 to have your expired tank hydro tested. Noble grape may even be willing to do the exchange on it as is.

I'd also check with Dave for everything else

Allan is correct - hydro at Simplex on 5 pound tank cost me $25.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I was in to Noble (the Mother Ship in Burnside) and got some good advice. The tank is too old to trade there and I don't have $200 to get going right now. I'll look into Simplex, and watch for more posts. What is a pristine Sleeman 30L worth? I stumbled onto two a couple years ago and stashed them away until now...

I'd be interested in the 30L sleeman kegs, what are you in the market for, maybe we can work out a trade.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I'm not sure what advice Noble Grape gave you, but these tanks are pretty resilient, so I'd pay the $25 at Don Brentons or Simplex to get it tested. Both of those places, the guys working there would give you a heads up if it's definitely going to fail, and might not even charge you if it does.

They do a visual before testing, and if it fails they won't do it. I had a steel tank fail due to pitting from rust.

Thanks Everyone! Tank is in to Simplex, should be ready. About $40 for inspection and fill! Now I need the SENKE and good to go. I have a couple simple brews on now (the bucket Blonde and Red with clear glucose). Start simple and work back up to the custom brews. I have two questions: can I store my charged kegs in my "cold" room (about 60f-65f), or do they need to be in the fridge? Second, can I carefully pour my draft into bottles and keep in the fridge for a week or two at a time? It would be nice to grab a case of my own draft for day trips...

Thanks everyone!

That temp is fine for storage. You can bottle off your kegs, but it can be tricky until you get the hang of it.

Sweet. I was reading a bit about making a beer gun from a length of tubing...I'm very encouraged!
