Hoptoberfest 2015 - September 26, 2015

Post by Lucas » Thu Jul 23, 2015 9:47 pm

Kyle has agreed to host Hoptoberfest 2015 - taking place on September 26th in the Ardmore subdivision of Halifax. Bring your partners, family, and friends, and most importantly your beer along. The theme encourages hoppy beers but all beers are welcome. Bring a keg or some bottles. We can update this post as plans develop.

When: September 26, 2015. 4pm - ???
Where: 6540 Almon Street (further details available from Kyle@ 902-442-8496).
Who: You! And your beer-loving friends and family.
Why: Beer!

Here is a spreadsheet that Kyle created - sign up the beers, food and equipment that you are bringing along!

Edit by Jimmy: Added some pictures from a previous Hoptoberfest.
Edit by chalmers to add address, contact and time. Will delete personal details after the fact.

Sept 19th = no away in Florida.... For work. I'll host in sackville if no one else wants to. Lots of space. I'm sure Mike and Derek would host a few tents too, and they who are close by.

George's B-day is the 23rd so he'll be legal this year for the latter dates.

This sounds very interesting! Can someone give me a quick run down on what's involved? Is there a beer style theme, or anything like that? Apologies for the questions, just joined in late November last year so I missed this.

Hmm I need to get something in a fermentor for this. Next up is a quick-soured brett beer, looks like I will be bringing some of that!

Can you quick sour a beer that fast?

I'm not sure what I'm making yet, something that doesn't need to age much I guess. I might just do something as simple as an APA.

Your certainly can quick sour a beer that fast. With the right equipment it takes 24-36hrs to sour wort, after that you boil as normal and are back on a regular fermentation schedule. I've also done a 100% Brett fermented IPA on a normal fermentation schedule with excellent results.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Yeah I hope to sour in 2 or 3 days - ideally it would be 24hrs but I don't know if I'll be able to keep it warm enough for that.

Last year hoppy beers were suspiciously few in number. Anyone who can bring hoppy beers should bring hoppy beers. I've started a spreadsheet for people to list their beer types and other pertinent information.

I know last year there was Rubbertoe's IPA, and Liverdance made something with some kind of hop product or something, and, I don't remember too much. I brought a 13 IBU scottish light, which seemed against the spirit of things, but I figured we could always use my session beers at these things when we're drinking all day. I might leave that for someone else though, since I'm leaning towards APA or IPA.

I'm not discouraging non IPAs; I'm just pointing out that we lost our way last year and went way off theme. The hard core brewers tend to bring several beers so they should try to brew at least one highly hopped beer for this event.
