Re: Barrel Filling - who's ready?
I only started looking at this thread today to be sure that the filling was indeed being held on the day I was told to hold the fruitfest (July 14) because people coming from far away for the former also want to attend the latter. It looks as if that has to be put on hold for now.
I like the sound of a sextarium. It should go well with wortly's raunchbier.
I sometimes feel a need to be a significant digit Nazi because advocates of US/imperial tend to abuse them in translating figures to imply that metric measurements are less convenient to use.

Re: Barrel Filling - who's ready?
Even if the filling is later than the fruit fest, the beer should be coming in corny legs under pressure, so could survive for a while like this. But you're right, too bad about the timing for those who wanted it to all be at the same event.

Re: Barrel Filling - who's ready?
There are actually 3 balls up in the air: Barrel Filling, Fruitfest and Hop Order.
Personally, I could use another week for all of the above. Meaning, an extra week for my RIS to attenuate (about to pitch the raunch cake... eeeeww), an extra week for my rhubarb wit, and an extra week to finalize the hop order.
So can we delay the filling by a week to the 22nd?

Delaying probably isn't that big of a deal.....but, remeber that the longer that barrel sits empty, the riskier the situation becomes.

How about the Saturday (21) instead of Sunday (22)? I don't want Hogie driving home drunk.hogie wrote:There are actually 3 balls up in the air: Barrel Filling, Fruitfest and Hop Order.

Raunch cake is pitched. Gravity is 1.032 now. Will let you know how it works.

Re: Barrel Filling - who's ready?
21st works for me. Let's set that as the 'firm' Fruitfest date and if the barrel business get's messed up, we'll still have the Fruitfest. Earlier a date is picked, usually the more people that can attend.
Looking forward to another BN get-together myself!

We can always do a sulpher burn or alcohol rinse before using it.

Re: Barrel Filling - who's ready?
Have you read Gordon Strong's book? He got f-ed up big time by doing a sulpher burn. I vote alcohol rinse.

No sulphur burn, lol! Nash didn't bother with anything, and I'm comfortable with that too. It's getting a 50 gal alcohol bath anyway hahahahahaa

Unfortunately, no gravity change since Thursday. Stuck at 1.032.

Re: Barrel Filling - who's ready?
I've firmed up the 21st as the Fruitfest date so hopefully you guys can roll out your barrel and fill it that weekend. See this thread for a discussion of the details.TimG wrote:21st works for me. Re: Barrel Filling - who's ready?
My own personal opinion is that a beer that underattenuated needs to be fixed, but I am going to leave that up the the rest of the participants to weigh in here.

Re: Barrel Filling - who's ready?
My immediate thought is to agree - but on the same token, do we have another 5 gallons to put in to replace Hogie's batch? If not, I think a taste may be in order. Given it's being blended with 8 other batches, the under attenuation will hardly be noticed most likely.
On that note, I have an attenuation question. I believe the formula is (OG-FG)/OG x 100. Promash calculates my ADF as 64.6%. If I use plato, (23.76-8.40)/23.76x100=64.65. If I use specific gravity, (100-33)/100x100=67%.
It's still early and I haven't had my tea yet so maybe I'm missing something obvious...?

Re: Barrel Filling - who's ready?
RobD also has an RIS, but he could be in the same boat with underattenuation.
I use Beersmith for attenuation calculation, and don't have it with me for comparison.

Can you find out where RobD's beer is sitting? Realistically I think to make a decision, all the options need to be known - if Rob's beer hit the numbers a bit better, I'd say that's the way to go though.
It must be that a) Promash uses Plato to calculate ADF and b) where this is perhaps outside the gravities most brewers work with, the non-linearity perhaps becomes more apparent?in the wort and beer gravities that most brewers work with, an almost linear relationship between (specific gravity - 1) and extract percentages exists

Re: Barrel Filling - who's ready?
I wouldn't say that a bit of underattenuation will ruin the beer, but it should be under 1.010 to go into the barrel. We don't need autolysis.
