Brewnoser Homebrew Review

Post by chalmers » Sun Feb 09, 2014 10:02 am

It sounds like we'll need a second one soon! :)

So, as March 22 is over a month away, for folks in town, please hold off on dropping off the beer to us drop-points, if possible (to reduce the length of time we need to have it under foot).
If there are folks from away who want to send it in, it's fine to do that anytime.

Running tally: ~18

I'd like to get in on this, however anything I have is kegged and for the life of me I can't get it out of the taps without a) making a huge mess and b) knocking most of the carbonation out of the beer.

Keith if you have a growler filler perhaps you could fill a bottle up the day before the due date and it sounds like they are sampling them quickly so carbonation shouldn't be an issue. If you don't have a growler filler I think Everwood has them for around 5 bucks. Just do it!

Keith, how have you been trying to fill things from the keg? Are you lowering the pressure and/or disconnecting the gas?

A cheap, easy bottle filler can be made by cutting a racking cane, jamming one end into a thumb tap, placing a rubber stopper over the racking cane, and filling from that. I've never had an issue using this method.

This ^^^

Works great and haven't had an issue with losing carbonation. Disconnect gas and bleed off most of the pressure. Control the backpressure in the bottle by squeezing the stopper with your thumb, letting it bleed gradually. Pretty sure It's a #2 stopper that you need, just check it out in the store.

Most methods of bottling from a keg will reduce carbonation - even the much more expensive beer gun. If I'm bottling off a growler or two for a party I don't worry about it, but if the beer is for a comp or aging, I will over carb by about 0.2 vol, and then when it's time to bottle, knock it down to 5psi and vent the keg so it doesn't foam like a MOFO.

Having issues? Do it outside at this time of year. PITA, but having everything extra cold has made life easier for me.

At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

Definitely helps to have your bottles and tubing cold - freezer cold.

If any of the Moncton folks are contributing and need a mule, I'll be heading to HRM Thursday March 6th.

Timing hasn't worked out for us to get a brew ready for this, so we're gonna back out this time. Hopefully we're better prepared for the next time this happens!

My first brew is as ready as it's going to be. Is there still room for another in the mix?

In tandem with this, would you consider running an “ask the Brewnoser Judge” thread for people to ask competition specific questions of the judges. There’s a wealth of information there. Why wait to get dinged in a competition if there would be a chance to ask questions before brewing and be proactive.

If there would be such a thread, I’d like to post a question on the malt profile I want to use to make a best bitter, and whether the judges thought I would lose points for it.

Hmmm, that could likely influence judge impartiality - eg if you give us a best bitter recipe and ask for competition feedback, and then there is just one or two in that category in the competition...
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

I think it could be useful for general advice, even for recipe formulation. For example if you decide to add spices to a non-spiced beer category you will probably get docked points even if the beer tastes great. There are lots of these types of "rules" that might not be apparent to brewers new to competitions.

Sure if we get into the specifics there is a chance that it could influence local competitions, but if you think about it as a Brewnoser vs. the world point of view, it might lead to us brewing better beer and doing better in competitions elsewhere.

Also, we have a thread for recipes and there are lots of brewers on her that have offered good advice to people looking to formulate new recipes.

Not sure if I'm making it out to the monthly meeting tomorrow night or not, but if I do make it is it alright to bring my Homebrew Review entry?

For the record, I am looking to enter one beer this time (forgot to specify previously).

I probably have to roll through before the 22nd. The 16th or the 20th.

Gents:

I need to apologize. Due to work I just haven't had time to put something together for this. Sorry for the late notice.

Thanks
