I wonder if Geoff Trail (#3 brewer of the year last year) brews at work. I would ...he works at Toronto Brewing Supplies.
Do you consider yourself to be a brewer, or a homebrewer?

This goes hand in hand with what I was going to ask. Who is our target audience anyway? Is this going to be open to entrants from across the country like other club competitions? If so, then we don't have to convince other homebrewers, they already know. Support or sponsorship from commercial breweries would be nice, but the competition should be squarely focused on homebrewing (amateur brewing, if you like).jeffsmith wrote:Home should be in there as far as I'm concerned. Perhaps there is stigma, but we should be proud that we're producing such great products in our homes. There's no point in hiding that.

Doe you guys consider yourselves to be brewers, or "homebrewers." Not trying to be argumentative, genuine question.

I've always mentioned I was a homebrewer in conversation. Never a brewer.

Same here, otherwise people think I work in a brewery. I have also said that 'all-grain brewing is my hobby.'CartoonCod wrote:I've always mentioned I was a homebrewer in conversation. Never a brewer.

I've always been a homebrewer, if people have a stigma then that's their problem! They will be missing out on some tasty beer

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Brewnosers Homebrew Competition sounds reasonable then. Thanks for the discussion.
Home is where the heart is, so even if you brew at work, if your heart is in it, then you are at home.

I feel like using the term "brewer" in place of "homebrewer" takes away from the profession of brewing. It would be like me calling myself a Doctor, because I heal myself with knowledge learned from the Doctors Book Of Home Remedies.
Homebrewer is a descriptive term for what we're doing..brewing at home.

Yeah, not to call anyone's commitment into question, but when's the last time any of us spent 40+ hours a week brewing?

That's fair enough, but do we make beer, or do we make "homebrew"?Jimmy wrote:I feel like using the term "brewer" in place of "homebrewer" takes away from the profession of brewing. This competition, the way you are naming it, will judge homebrew ...."homebrew competition" That's what I don't like.

I make home-brewed beer. By shying away from the term homebrew, I think you're contributing to the stereotype rather than trying to change people's minds about it.

According to Merriam Webster, we make home brew, which is a "type" of beer.GuingesRock wrote:That's fair enough, but do we make beer, or do we make "homebrew"?Jimmy wrote:I feel like using the term "brewer" in place of "homebrewer" takes away from the profession of brewing. Does that make you a homedoctor?Jimmy wrote:I feel like using the term "brewer" in place of "homebrewer" takes away from the profession of brewing. It would be like me calling myself a Doctor, because I heal myself with knowledge learned from the Doctors Book Of Home Remedies.
Supposing you had the same qualifications as a doctor, maybe you were even better qualified than most doctors out there, but you worked out of your home ...are you then a homedoctor, and your speciality turns from neurology say, to homedoctoring.

No, because my profession would be that I'm a doctor (who happens to work from home).GuingesRock wrote:Does that make you a homedoctor?Jimmy wrote:I feel like using the term "brewer" in place of "homebrewer" takes away from the profession of brewing. It's no different than some of the Nano breweries that are currently up and running. They may be "technically" brewing at home (because that's where their brewery is), but in the end, they are brewing as a business.
Really it's the distinction between hobby (homebrewer) and business (brewer).

A professional brewing at home isn't a home brewer. This is getting crazier.Jimmy wrote:

If the idea is to distinguish between amateur and professional brewers, then shouldn't those be the words used?

Either way, they're a brewer (because they brew as a business), but the final product is what varies (homebrew vs non homebrew). This distinction is also what would generally prevent them from entering a homebrew competition.GuingesRock wrote:A professional brewing at home isn't a home brewer. I'm pretty sure they would agree that if they haul out their OBK 15G pot and burner and rips out a 10G batch of IPA that they are homebrewing.
