Where to get custom CNC Machining done?

Post by GillettBreweryCnslt » Thu Feb 11, 2016 5:24 pm

Hey,

I am looking for a place to cut a few dozen pieces of wood for me. Anyone have any experience or know anyone who runs a CNC machine?

Cheers

I know some of the sign companies around use them.

You may also find someone who has access to one and can do some work on the side.

It's been a bit of a dream of mine to build a CNC machine someday.

Me too... i have looked at many plans but never really came too close to pulling the trigger. I have a 130 year old house that has 60+ decorative trim pieces on the outside that i would love hammer out on a CNC for just the cost of the wood. They are rotting off at an alarming rate.

There is a jig that woodworkers use to copy patterns. How intricate is the wood pieces you need done? I don't know who would have one of these http://wood-carver.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but it might give you some more people to try. I would start with a furniture restoration company or else a classic home renovator.

Oh there are all kinds of places that can do the pieces, but i'd be in 10 grand easy and thats just one part of decorative scroll work that needs to be replaced. I work for a company that restores commercial heritage properties so i knew all the people to get pricing from locally, and i knew it wasn't going to be pretty.

I'm curious to see if anyone has any ideas for Dave on CNC places in halifax because i'd like to try getting some pricing from non-woodworking shops.

If someone has some cash they'd like to drop, there are a bunch of neat looking Kickstarter CNC projects for the crafty. For example, this guy will cost you $1200 USD at the ground floor. That's not a big outlay. Aside from the fun hobby aspect, you could probably recoup that with a few baby contracts word of mouth.

I'm ordering sets of taster glasses to sell through the store, I want to get paddles for the "flights". I also need to get bases for the grain mills made. And I don't want to pay someone to hand craft them, I'm looking at a hundred+ pieces so they've got to be cost effective enough that you sods will buy them!

Yes, cause I have the time to learn the software and the space to set that up with the appropriate table saw to pre-cut wood. Have you been to my place? ;)

Do you think you could find "blank" paddles to order through some restaurant supply outfit and then just manage something for the glasses using a drill press? That might be a halfway between handcrafted and CNC'd custom in terms of per unit cost vs start up cost.

Some shops have handicap folks who can do simple and repetitive work. I may qualify for said work.

Paddles are easy the bases could be made after some prototyping.
