Mash tun too big?

Post by Halifax_Jeff » Fri Jan 16, 2015 7:25 pm

I want to get into all grain brewing and got my hands on a 62 quart cooler like this for next to nothing. http://www.coleman.com/product/62-quart ... LmPEV-COrU" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I was going to convert it to a mash tun. Do you guys think this would be too big for 5 gallon batches? I'm not finding anything online with a definitive answer and I don't want to go through the work for nothing when I could just use it as a cooler instead.

Thanks in advance!

Left that's a perfect size for 5 gal batches with no sparge.

Yea it will allow you to do some big beers too. I have a 75quart which I use for 10 gals and sparge on all but 4% beers.

I use a 70qt for my no sparge 5 gallon batches, it also will work great if you want to do a double batch with sparge.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Mash tun is complete and I'm one step closer to all-grain. It was ~$50 to make so I'm happy with it. I have a keg from my brother in-law I'm going to convert into a keggle and then all I need is a propane burner to get things going! I don't have the space to do it yet, but when I do I'll be ready.

If you find you have a lot of headspace left after mashing in, just throw some tinfoil on top of the mash during the rest, it'll reduce your heat loss. Of course, not a concern if she's full to the top.

Thanks for the tip. I'll most likely have a fair amount of head space doing mostly 5 gallon batches. I was kicking around the idea of filling the space another way but that seems a lot easier.
