Immersion Whirlpool Arm

Well I wanted something quick and easy to setup on brew day that would work with my chugger pump, without needing to punch a hole in my pot. So I thought of what I could do, and came up with a Immersion Whirlpool arm. I'm also mulling with the idea of adding volume markings.
I just picked up a short piece of 1/2" soft copper, a pipe bender, and next trip to daves for a Type E Camlock.

Very Nice. Probably a dumb question, but how do you connect the pipe to the camlock?

actually rethought it. Was just going to force it in there where it's soft copper, however a compression fitting would probably be best and attach a Type A to the compression fitting.

compression to type a is brilliant. Let me know how this works out for you.

That might have a tendency to kick backwards when the wort is flowing out of the bottom end. I don't think it would be a serious issue, but might not remain vertical that's all.

I'm guessing that Keith is likely going to attach it to his immersion chiller. At least that's how Jamil Z. designed his originally.

honestly I haven't given it much thought and was going to address that once I gave it a test run.

Mine used to hang but it moved too much so I built it into my kettle instead. Camlock here too. There should be pics in my thread.

So the whirlpool arm is setup and in place. Did a test run, but due to the curve the compression fitting didnt' completely seal. Need to solder the connection. Anyone know a spot in Sackville that I could get this done fairly cheap?

Yeah, go buy some plumbing solder & flux, a propane torch if you don't have one, and do it yourself. It's not hard. Everyone fucks up a bit at first but you'll get the hang of it. Watch some youtube videos and do it sober.
Be safe too, wear goggles and gloves.

Tighten the compression fitting a bit more.

Which way round is your whirlpool going? have you got it set right for the northern hemisphere?

yea I may have bent it the wrong way, but the end result will be the same.

Tried this. Unfortunately due to the curve it will require a small amount of solder.

Or just come to Dartmouth and I'll solder this on for you. Not sure if it will fit, it's for 1/2" I'd straight pipe.

maybe your soft copper got oval'ed a bit with the bending? in which case solder wouldn't be a proper fix either (thought it might work). flaring the copper so it is round again is the better solution

The ferrule will be stuck on by now. I wonder if you could put the end of the tube between two pieces of wood in the jaws of a vice and make it round again that way.

I think I'll be able to stop the leak by widening the copper using some needle nose pliers

Can you tap it back to round with a hammer in you don't have a vice?

Use an adjustable wrench and spin it around the tubing, adjust it smaller and repeat. Usually works pretty well.
