Making my third attempt at soldering the immersion chiller today. Soldered joints seem to be holding. Need to connect it to pressure though, and the 1/2" pipe to male hose thread are actually 1/2" pipe to male pipe thread. I'm assuming this won't make a pressure tight seal if I screw a hose onto the MPT? What kind of adaptor do I need? (Don't really want to just hose clamp a cut hose onto the 1/2" pipe but I will if that's the solution)

No that won't work. Faucet to NPT are not compatible...you'll need a female pipe (I'm assuming 1/2") to a faucet of the proper gender.

Princess auto has a good selection of brass npt to garden hose fittings usually.

Bought an el cheapo 1/2" hose and worked it over the 1/2" pipe. The chiller holds pressure!! About time I finished this, haha. Thanks for the advice all!

You might need to tighten hose clamps every time you use it though, if you have them. I used to have a chiller from NG with PVC cooling lines and it leaked into the beer unless I did that every time. Got fed up with it.

Yup, used screw on clamps. I'll keep an eye on it.

I used some high temp silicone for the in and out with house fittings off that attached on both ends with hose clamps. Glad you got it finished. I still haven't given mine the pressure test, will do that next weekend before the inauguarl brew.

I used compression fittings on mine and then had the option of hose barbs or garden hose adapters - no soldering.

With hindsight, I would use compression fittings next time. This works pretty well now that it is pressure tight tho. 6$ hose kinked already though haha

My immersion chiller looks like this ^, except that at both the inlet and the outlet, I soldered another 90 degree elbow that points down + another 2 inches of 1/2" pipe. No more kinks in hoses and no dripping in the pot. Win-win!

That was my original plan but I got too frustrated by the soldering. Might happen sometime though.
