Looks like they are available again, but more expensive.

Those are a great style for grain mills. I grabbed mine at PA.

I got mine last year from that surplus place in the states and only paid like $45 delivered to my door.

I never checked PA to see what they had in stock.
Yes they are great. I find the low RPM still does the job and I fear less for the bearings on my mill
than I would with a higher speed motor. I'm very pleased with mine.

Yikes! That seems like a lot!
The best solution I have found is a 1750 rmp furnace blower motor with a 2.5 inch pulley on the motor and a 9 inch pulley on the mill.

Blower motors are free if you keep your eyes open or catch a furnace shop at the right time.

yeah I'm looking to get a motor at some point, but not willing to drop that much on one.

Unless you get a free furnace motor, you'll spend more on shives and belts.

Whats the thoughts for torque on these gear motors? 30in-lbs seems perhaps a little on the low side from what I've been reading?

I'll look at mine when I get to the city tonight and post it's rating.

I'd be curious if PA still would offer such a product

I looked quickly last week, nothing that seemed great. They have motors and gear reducers but buying both puts you at $200+

I could have got one for free ;) I work at the trade, but didn't want a belted motor as I think the strain of the belt would
wear the bushings on the mill faster.

Did you have chance to look at the torque rating on yours?

6.2 Nm

That's 55in-lb then if I converted correctly. Almost double the Ebay motor. I think most corded drills have a fair bit more torque than either. The Ebay motor is just a bit over 1/8th horse power - an article I read in BYO suggests a 1/3 HP or higher. Not really sure what to make of all that, but I think I'll likely opt for a motor with more power.

Somewhere, Kyle is looking on with great displeasure over your converting to evil units.

I burned up a B&D corded drill (5-6 amps) before I switched to a gearhead motor.

Haha!

I did the same thing - well... Gavin did... I came into the apt to a strong smell of burning varnish and him saying "I'm not sure why, but the drill seems to be running reallllly slow now"

I've got a 1/4 HP motor I could step down but have been putting it off. I must admit, crushing grain by hand is losing its charm.

But we're proud of you for using Nm, even if you did just read it off the plate :)

I keep thinking I should invest in a proper motor before I burn out the drill (which is a pain to use, anyway)

Yea, thats in line with what I've been reading too. 50-100in-lbs seems to be most recommended (with the higher end being primarily 3 roller mills)

I run a 3 roller, and if my motor is 55in-lb, you definitely don't need more than that.

Keggermeister has been running a belted setup for years now and never had to change the bushing as far as I know. I dont seem to need much tension on my belt anyway and am running a 3 roller mill.

Having it motorized is awfully nice, especially if you have a 25-30lb hopper. flick it on and go do something else while your grain mills!

Correct.
My mill started out with 2 coupled 1/3 HP motors shived to 300 rpm. It worked ok, but could not crush a hopper of hard wheat, so I upgraded the motor.
If you are building one now, consider putting a gate on the hopper outlet and a way to remove the full hopper in case it jams.

Now Mine has a 3/4 HP motor shived to ~320RPM I have never had bushing issues other than to oil them occasionally.

I found the motor on Kijiji for $50.
