Hoping to build this weekend. I am thinking of bl & red to the controler with a ground on that box. Bl & red with a ground to the element. Could someone have a look at the build after I'm done before I plug it in?

Also is there a problem with using the pot on propain with the element in the pot?

Propane would be an issue depending on what's on the outside of the pot - would quickly melt the insulation on your wires
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

Metal box on the outside and I would remove the wire.

I'd recommend looking at the StillDragon tri clover bulkhead so you could remove the element entirely and cap the fitting when using propane.

I was hopping to not alter the pot with welding.

That fitting is fucking sweet. I tried to cobble something like that together before I soldered my ferrule into my keggle. If I ever do it again this is the route I'll take

Hey guys,

I'm doing the same thing. Just bought a new pot and 4500W element from Dave at Everwood (Thanks, Dave!). I found this on amazon.ca for a controller: http://www.amazon.ca/RioRand-Rectifier- ... regulators" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Thoughts on this? Think it'll work?
Anybody have any tips on putting together all the pieces?

thanks
Chris

It is just big enough for the element and the heat sink looks small. Should work.

Yeh, I'll probably have to hook up a heat sink is what I was thinking also. Ok thanks, guys!

A friend of mine pointed out to me that this unit (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00JJGM ... 3JGESWVM9Q" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) actually has a fan in it (look closely and you can see it). Awesome. I've ordered it, and when I start construction I'll post photos and my insctructions.

Hey Trevor,

that chematic cutaway you posted was from the Electric Brewery. Did you follow their plans? I was wndering if you put anything between your gang box and the kettle? (they put a faceplate and a washer). I was thinking I wouldn't bother with that and was just wondering what you did.
thanks

Hey Chris. Did you get that voltage regulator set up? How does it connect input from wall plug in and output to element? Looking at some options but personally won't be using a PID controller, just a direct manual control of element. Thanks!

Hey Trevor,

no I haven't done my wiring yet I'm afraid. I'm lazy. I'm in the process of sealing the thermometer properly so there are no leaks. Once that's done, then the wiring! I plan to post steps and photos once I get more done. I'll also post the wiring diagram that a friend of mine with electrical experience helped me with

I'm looking to get something together for my elements soon and deciding on some options. Would you be willing to send me the electrical diagram so I can decide if that works for me?

Also looking at this as a ready to go option :

http://m.ebay.ca/itm/191523884209" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But is a bit pricier as I need 2...

Let me know. Thanks!

Sure thing. I'll get it up this weekend for you to take a look at.
What size element will you have? That box at the link looks pretty cool, but is only good for 2400W at 120V and 20A.

I have 120v 1500w elements (run 2 in a pot - have more flexible than going with 1 element at 240v...). I do 5g batches and find 2 1500w elements work great

Don't have a dedicated space so don't want to limit to 240v at this point

Could anyone with one of these eBay 10kW controllers post back on the part number on the Triac/SCR (connected to heatsink) and the rough dimensions of the heatsink?
I'd be curious to run some numbers on it.

Just ordered a couple of the 10kw ones from eBay. A little overkill for me right now, but will allow me to upgrade in future. (I use 2 1500w elements on 110v). The bigger heatsink and fan will be better than the smaller rated ones.
