And you might never have any trouble. Quite a few guys here have belted mills and have never had a hitch. It's just that I can see more strain on the bushings with a belted system vs a direct drive system.

Also with mine I have reverse, so if anything should jam, I can reverse it to free it up. Your idea of a gate on the belted system do make sense though

You can combine a belted system with a direct drive to take the strain off the bearings.

Hey Tony, any idea where to get a motor and direct drive couplings like yours locally? Cost much? I have a bookmarked site with the parts needed, but I think most of it was from America

I got my motor from a surplus place in the states, but they no longer carry that type of motor.

edit; looks like it is no longer carried there either.


I got my spider coupler at Princess Auto and the switches I had on hand, along with the jct. box etc.

Not sure if PA wil have that motor or not.

Yes, it was the same motor.
I was glad I got mine when I did.

Does anyone know of a place to get a gear motor at a reasonable price these days?

I've checked the usual places like kijiji and ebay but it seems to be really hard to find something rated at 1/2 hp or greater that runs on 110 - 120 V AC with RPM's around 300. I think I may have to grab a furnace blower motor and a pulley set-up.
