Fermentation/lager chamber (mini fridge)

Post by jacinthebox » Wed Jun 03, 2015 11:52 pm

Picked up a 4.5cf GE mini fridge.
Cut the door skin off...took out shelving...bent the freezer down out of the way.

Just need to build my temp controller. I'll use a heat wrap for heat when needed. Probe will go into the carboy thermowell for accurate Temps.

I've seen lots or video on bending freezer sections. What's the trick?

Take your time. When I bent mine I held it very close to the base where it comes out of the back of the fridge while I bent the rest of it to make sure it didn't kink. I let the fridge sit unplugged for awhile as well so it was warm and nice and pliable. I've bent 2 and honestly couldn't imagine how I could crack/damage it unless I rushed it.

so I'm thinking of how i'll build my temp controller.
2 options
standard box with outlets...or cut a hole in the door, and wire using the existing wires from the stock thermostat.

2 questions, has anyone ever done this here, and can I wire my fermwrap directly to the stc 1000?

Ok...I took a look at the existing thermostat....connected with standard white black and green wires.
Now to figure out if I can neatly wire the stc 1000 using these wires.

All set up...only thing left to do is add in a quick disconnect so I can remove the fermwrap when not in use.

This is awesome! Wonder if I can hide one of these in my basement without the wife knowing!

That looks great. Any concern with moisture build up and the exposed back of the stc?
Kegged:
Bottled: Chocolate Orange Stout, Barkshack Sparkling Ginger Mead, Cherry Berliner
Fermenting: Fruit (havent decided yet) Lambic
Considering: Imperial Chocolate Raspberry Stout, Fir Tip Ale

I was at first. ...I've been running it for a few weeks and so far shows no sign of moisture build up. I did wrap some electrical tape around the back (where the wires connect in)...more so to help keep the wire bundle together...but it also may serve as moisture protection.

My buddy is an electrician...I had him come over and take a look before I started anything...and then again when I was done...just wanted to make sure everything was good
