Re: A New Hop(e) IPA
For an experiment I decided to take the gallon of wort with hop sludge that I normally toss and pitch some yeast on it to see if it comes out. I'm going to do a side by side with each and compare.

Re: A New Hop(e) IPA
Nice! Love the name too. Let us know how the exbeeriment works out
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

This looks good - what temp did you steep/whirlpool at?

Well, a pre-carbed tasting suggests that tossing the hop sludge has been good practice. I got a few bottles so maybe it will improve with some conditioning.

This turned out really nice. Might cut out the crystal next time. Will try one of the hop sludge bottles later.

Re: A New Hop(e) IPA
Ok I'm drinking a hop sludge bottle now and it's good too. Maybe I don't need to toss the hop shit at the bottom of the carboy anymore? Honestly the only difference is that gallon wasn't dry hopped so it doesn't have the same simcoe flavour but every bit as good.

I always dump everything into the fermenter.

Re: A New Hop(e) IPA
I did the exact same experiment over the course of three or four different batches and found the same thing. I also noticed that the beer that sat on the trub was actually a little smoother. I have no reservations to just fermenting everything after that.Broob wrote:Ok I'm drinking a hop sludge bottle now and it's good too. Having one of the hop sludge bottles now. Super clear and smooth bitterness. I'm converted, I'm dumping the whole kettle into the fermentor from now on.
